The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

@legopart

You hav very interesting FR graphs. I can see that the T1 is not for me, The Senn HD6XX goes wonky after 3K. I wonder what that is about? Mark that one off my list. The Grados have a low end shelf of up to 5 Db. Not good for sub-bass. I see the DT880s have an actual boost of 5 Db at 8K, not 3 Db. Yes, that would definitely bother some ears. It would not and does not not bother me due to my hearing peculiarities mentioned earlier. I think older people do need the HF boosted anyway. I wonder if it is possible to map the FR when the headphones are being used with a particular amp?

As a note, the FR graph of the DT880s is different from the one published by Inner Fidelity. For instance, the graph from Inner Fidelity shows much more recessed mids, also where the highs actually show up with less of a boost, I think yours is more accurate. What are you doing differently?

I wonder what the Amiron Home headset FR would be? This is my next purchase as a goal of mine.

I have both the Amiron Home and a T1.2 Black, the Amiron has a more noticeable spike than the T1.2. The FR response doesn’t tell the whole story of the T1.2, Amiron Home, and DT 880 compared to each other. The DT 880 600 I personally found the leanest and brightest of those three. The most akin to the DT 880 of the Tesla Beyers I heard is probably the DT 1990 Pro with analytical pads.

Are the 880 and 990 different enough to justify owning both?
Depends what you're looking for. The 880 is essentially a 990 with more damping material (felt) in front and behind the driver so the bass and treble are lessened. The same reasons I like the 990 (elevated bass and treble) make them slightly fatiguing over long periods and with certain genres. The 880 is more neutral so makes for easier listening.

I think having the 880 in the premium version (lower clamping force) and the 990 in the pro version (higher clamping force) also compliments their sound signatures - the 990 is great for intense listening sessions and the 880 is the type of headphone that you could almost forget you are wearing.

I am right now using Amarra Luxe. I decided to give their EQ functionality a try. i looked up the DT880, and found EQ settings for the headphones. So I implemented those changes. I am now listening to the mid frequencies that I did not know was there, at least comparatively speaking. I do think the result is a bit exaggerated. For instance, the bass is much more upfront, more than I prefer it to be.

What EQ settings are you using? Folk often try to EQ by making a 'mirror image' of the headphones measured frequency response. IME experience I often find this causes too extreme a change. A few days ago for fun I tried to EQ my cheap HD201 to match my HD600, using Tyll Hertsens' measurements of both models as a reference. The result was not good, - sucked out mids and bloated bass. I then tried EQ'ing the HD201 simply by ear and I got them sounding much closer to the HD600. My EQ settings by ear were less extreme than the graph suggested was needed. As for the DT880, I find that cutting 9kHz by a few dBs and boosting the upper mids by 1 or 2 dBs is all that's needed to make them sound neutral.

I am now going by ear. I am going one step at a time from the original parameters that I used from the Internet. So far, I have the following, a 4.1 db boost at 31 Hz, a 2.2 db boost at 62 Hz, a 3.1 db boost at 4000 Hz, and a 4 db deemphasis at 8000 Hz. I am thinking that I do not need the boost at 31 Hz. When I was using GlissEQ, a dynamic graphic EQ, I also had a 4 db deemphasis at 8000 Hz. However, it changed depending the amount of content happening at that frequency. Otherwise, it was up to 1.5 db less, so at about only a 2.5 db deemphasis at 8000 Hz. So I may reduce this deemphasis a bit.

I bought DT770 80 ohm little while ago, and i could still return them to try out dt880 250 ohm. I have dragonfly black, and might get better amp at some point.

770 are nice change from my old hd598 and unless there is better option i think i will keep them. I know they are not exactly comparable because of closed back, but i don't necessarily need that.

I'm little sensitive to treble and 770 80 ohm i think is borderline for me, so if 880 is worse i think it might not be worth it to even try. I read that 880 are not as bad as some other models, but i read as well that 770 80 ohm is one of the more tolerable ones. I'm kind getting used to it now i feel like. Anyone here experience about both of these?

According to Innerfidelity measurements, DT770 600ohm has stronger treble above 6kHz than the DT880 600ohm, but the DT770's stronger bass below 200Hz might help to balance it.

I've not heard the 770, but I suspect the dip at 4kHz-5kHz and the bass boost below 150Hz would not be to my tastes as I personally enjoy a more neutral response instead of a "U-shape tuning".

I found the timbre of treble sounds with the 770 to be plasticky(?) and artificial compared to my other classic mid priced cans DT880 600 & 250, HD600 & 650, and K701 (Austria). Not “too much treble”, just a tonality I hated and couldn’t unhear, so I sold it within a couple weeks. Maybe an aberration though.

Hmm, i guess i will buy the DT880 pro 250ohm and then return the one that is worse, so i don't have to return the DT770 pro 80ohm for no reason. They did take some getting used to, but now that i have used them for while, i'm starting to like them.

+1. Having a right to return, or borrowing a can, or going to a meet is great, as there is no substitute for spending some time with stuff in your own system.

Usual place i buy my electronics from did not have any on DT880 on shelf, so i decided to try out the DT990 250ohm instead.
Those were for sure too bright for me and to be honest i could not really find anything i liked about them. They were not as ear piercing as i had read, but they did not feel like something i would like listen for longer time. Edit. i actually think my dragonfly might have been bugging and not working right, now it sounds better, but i get the ear piercing part now.

With the information i have gathered the 80 ohm version on those DT770 is little different from the 32 and 250 ohm version.
Its only 2-3 day wait to get those DT880, but with nothing i feel lacking on DT770 i think i will just keep them as there is always time for next pair.
DT770 are only 130e, and DT880 would cost almost 200e (pro) or 170e (premium). I think the premium would be too lose for me, as my head is pretty small,
and as new i almost feel like the 990 could be tighter.

The HD598 are already pretty neutral from what i know, so DT770 might complement them better anyways. Having that 1 good sounding closed back headphones is plus as well.
