The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread

I have always wanted to try out a Beyerdynamic

DT880 is flatter, more extended and more open sounding than HD6x0, but it's also sharper, slightly lighter in the bass and thus it suits a smaller range of recordings.
DT880 shines with acoustic music for instance, but can sound awful with some pop music.
HD6x0 is always pleasing.

HD6x0 clamps harder but has deeper pads than DT880. Different pros and cons, you know.
Both are relatively comfortable anyway.

If you'll enjoy Beyerdynamic's energetic presentation with incredibly fast treble decay and tight but never bloomy bass then DT880 might serve you very well.
Otherwise the Senn is a safer bet.

A beyer with less bass than a sennheiser? well thats surprising lol

Always thought every Beyer had super sub bass like car audio

One thing is for sure I always liked the super dark laid back sound of the HD 555 but at the same time I always felt it was a little too dark and veiled.

Yes, DT880 has less bass than HD600.
DT880 is the oppossite of a car with a subwoofer (had some of those too)

DT880's bass is relatively flat and extended but lower in level vs HD6x0
Sufficient bass for top class recordings like 'Thousand Shades Of Blue' by Carmen Gomes Inc or 'Sessions From The 17th Ward' by Amber Rubarth, but quite bass light for modern mainstream music.

From your comments it seems you should try to find an AudioQuest Nighthawk

lol way over my budget.

BTW out of curiosity how does the DT 770 compared to HD 600 in terms of bass I assume its way more sub bass than the HD 600

Hi there,

I've asked the same in the comparison thread, but let me try to get some other perspectives in here also.

I'm really torn between 880 and 990.

990 Pro is going for about $140 and 880 for $190. I understand there are no better or worse, they are just different, but taking price into account  makes it even harder to decide and I can't try them.  Almost going for the 990, seems a nice bang for buck :D

Planning to use these on a 1mV@100ohm Digital Piano, would it be best to go for the 250 in any way?

Kind regards,

Yes, DT770 is more bassy than HD600.
And also brighter in the treble region.

What about the DT 990 open back how does its bass compare to HD 600?

DT990's bass is slightly bigger, more surrounding and faster than HD600's bass
(especially the Pro version)

While HD600 is warm and full sounding, DT990 is more punchy and contrasting.

The dt990 is an under-appreciated headphone, IMO. I wasn't impressed with it at first, but if you can EQ-in its naturally sucked-out mid-range, it sounds great. Plenty of bass and treble to work with, detail, and a nice soundstage. I even prefer my EQ'd 990/600 to the T90.

Hi guys, hoping I can get a little amping advice for my 250ohm DT-880's.  I've been running them off my Asus Maximus VII Formula motherboard which has an "up to 600ohms" Texas Instruments LM4562 for the amp and Cirrus Logic CS4398 for the DAC.  Giving that info just in case somehow the amp or amp/dac combo I'm thinking of wouldn't be an improvement over those.

So I was looking at the Schiit stuff.  I was thinking for now I'd go with a Magni 2 Uber (in case I want the pre-amp outs later), but I wasn't sure if the Vali 2 would be a better choice (I'm not looking to go with the higher priced models at this time).  In case it has any effect on the choice the primary music I listen to is hard rock and heavy metal but I also use the headphones with a modmic for gaming.  No twitch stuff just MMO type games (WoW, BDO, etc.).  My thought was for now to run the amp off the PC and maybe eventually pair it with a Modi 2 Uber or something down the line if I decide to go external on the DAC.

Any thoughts on this?  At this price point vs. what's built into my PC's motherboard would I just be throwing money away and should be saving up for a higher price bracket? If so, what price point should I be looking at, and any examples of Schiit products, or others would be appreciated.  Hoping this is the right thread to ask all this in since it's about driving my DT-880's for the most part :)

Anyone have good suggestions for a portable amp for the 250 ohm version? I already have a Vali for home use. Was looking at Cayin C5? Any thoughts or other suggestions?
Thanks

I have been using my Fiio e12 to drive my Dt 880 600 ohm headphones, and was happy with the result.

I have thought of grabbing the blacks. Are you talking about the 250 ohm Limited Edition all blacks with the T90 headband, black grill, and T90(I'm assuming) earpads? These? I know there were other all-blacks of the DT 880 so it can cause confusion. Because if you are talking about the other all-blacks with have the DT 880/990 black velour pads, then that will be brighter and airier than a normal DT 880 due to different materials in the pads.

These BeyerDynamic DT 880 Premium Special Edition Chrome Version 250 ohm are $149.00 is this a good price ? BUYDIG EBAY

It seems like to good to be true. Saw it yesterday. Some negative comment recently was someone commenting on a Beats headset that was not authentic from the seller. But can't imagine counterfeit dt880s...

Would love to hear some other opinions from folks here because I'd pickup the pair as well.
