Highs are wayy too forward(Will be asking MCA about this) and soundstage is a lot smaller. All-in-all he gave me an open ticket to send them back 2 weeks ago because he had already made a closed pair and now will make me an open pair; what I want.

I figured the reverberation from the wood would cause a treble spike. That's too bad. I think they are just meant to be open.

My dt880s just came in and when I first put them on I was blown away. They sound pretty damn good. My HD 555s just sound so flat and neutral compared to these. The ear pads are extremely comfortable. Not quite as comfortable as the 555s but almost there! Fits a lot better than the AD900x's. But that may just be because of my head. The only thing the 880's lose in is precision and soundstage. I watched http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5X9oUNSYyE again and my 555's easily won in precision once again. The AD900xs lost as well. I'll probably give some more input on these once I actually put in around 20 hours of music in these cans.

Also just a quick question... I thought the DT880s came with the coiled wire instead of a standard cable? Not that I would actually prefer coiled but I thought it came coiled. Ordered from Razor Dog.

The 880 Pro comes with a coiled cable and the 880 Premium comes with a straight cable.

After returning the defective used Edition 2005 I found another pleasing offer: a DT880 old model for 40€.
Today they arrived:
 
 

 
As you perhaps can see the pads are quite flat and there are holes in the dust covers (who the hell did that?).
No matter - new pads and covers directly from Beyerdynamic were already planned into budget. Will be ordered today.
Had the feeling that they needed some awakening from a long sleep - sounded a bit confused at first listening. So I gave them 2 hours of Burn-In-track. Of course it might be only a head thing but it felt better after that, music entered a stage.
And wow, coming from 2 weeks DT770 I felt like coming out of a cage. So much wider and airy.
Sometimes the mids are over pronounced, especially with female voices. But that should be due to the holes in the covers that are not meant to be there. Bass is quite light - that should be due to the quite flat pads and the Audinst MX2 as amp. 
New pads and covers shoudl be here next week - I´ll let you know how they do.
All in all I am more than happy with that investment and had already some big smiles.
Nice thing is the saving of 250€ compared to a new one - that´s about a Bottlehead Crack I have an eye on.

Although technically I'm cheating since my dt880s are 250 ohm. I was scared that the O2 wouldn't be able to drive the 600ohm ones well enough.
 
I have the buyer's remorse.

While searching the net I saw that the very early DT880s (and DT990s) all had holes in the dustcover.
Is here any specialist on board who can tell if it´s good to change the covers to the newer ones without hole?
 
Edit: btw they are very good selected - I measured exactly 595 Ohm for each.

Apparently there is not a huge difference between sound of the 250 and 600 Ohm DT880s.
personally, I can't hear much difference between the 32 and 600 Ohm DT880s.
 
The O2 will have no trouble driving 600 Ohm DT880s............

The only difference I found btwm 250 and 600 Ohm was in the highs. Less strident in the 600.

The 600 seemed overall 'smoother', but that could have been psychological...

Doesn't this show that the Red 32 Ohm and the Blue 250 Ohm are similar while the Green 600 Ohm is quite different?

Hi, want to get a pair of these, and it seems like i should be getting the 600 model, but i do not have a headphone amp.   Do I need one, if i have udac2 with my computer?  I see a lot of people have the o2 model.  Is a home made model like this the best deal?
 
Actually i have some Samson studio GT speakers with a sound card built in that are powered, can I use this?  the quality might not be that good though.

It certainly shows that the 600 ohm has a suckout centered on 4khz. Could this be why it's preferred, because that suckout seems to ameliorate the peak higher up? Could it be that the 32 and 250 ohm are actually more accurate?
