The Beyerdynamic DT250 Thread

DT-250s 250 Ohm arrived today. Tested it on my Line 6 guitar amp modeler and my Pioneer A-656 mark II Stereo-Receiver.
These headphones have a lot of bass. Maybe a bit too much. A bit boomieness in the 100hz area. I thought that was the problem of the 80 Ohm version.
Treble response is a bit recessed. Overall these headphones sound I would describe "warm". For comparison : I own the DT-770 pro 80 ohm and the AKG K-702. Both of them deliver more treble response. Mids are most on the DT-250 and much less on the 770s. The AKG 702's mids are in the middle of both.
the DT-250s 250ohm really not hard to drive. They are much louder than the AKG K-702 70 ohm and a little bit louder than the DT-770s 80 ohm. What a surprise!

Posting back on this original thread of mine because I am about to get that old pair of mine back. This is a good test whether these beyers stay good over time. I ordered extra pads just in case as well.
Of course, they blossom with time :gs1000smile:
3 years in, 2500 hours, and still my most favourite pair of HPs, and I have tried many others, even several magnitudes more expensive.

Still love this headphone, especially the 250ohm variant. Beats out the AKG K240/K271, ATH-M50x/M70x, DT770-80-250-600/1770/177x, Senn HD280/380, Shure SRH840/940, Sony MDR-V6/7506/7520. Only the Shure SRH1540 is better to me for sealed headphone under $500, and the DT250-250 can win in some low-volume situations. Anyway, my top 3 sealed headphones at the moment: 1. Ether CX, 2. Shure SH1540, 3. Beyer DT250-250. The Ether CX is the hardest to drive correctly, the DT250-250 is hard to drive for weak amps, and the SRH1540 can be overwhelmed easily and become uncontrolled at high volumes. All have different amp needs.

For me, Dt250-250 are amongst the easiest to drive HPs, so much so, that I use them even unamped straight from DAP/Audio interface
I agree that the DT250-250 sounds fine from most sources, I find that they can be a bit bass-light with insufficient amplification. Sure, they have enough volume, but plugged into my Schiit Magni Heresy or THX-887 (especially that one) the bass is tight, articulate and the whole sound is more balanced. Either way I still love 'em!

I have the venerable k371. I hate the the construction of these, a single tiny screw can’t hold the rotating cup and the extra loose adjusting slider mechanism. and on the head they simply make me strange. But, dear friends... the sound of the latest revision is simply outstanding. the tonal balance is incredible, the mids are well isolated from the rest, the bass extends like it have no ends, the highs are not offensive in any way and peakless. I’d really want to switch to a more effective and utilitarian design, like the copp or the dt250, but I don’t want to lose the wondeful signature. From your descriptions it seems that the dt250 can be interchangeable in terms of sound. For sure the dt770 cancompete with these. My primary goal is to study the execution of opera and classical voices on the go and my psoriasis doesn’t allow me to wear in ears. at home my hd6xx does the job in an almost perfect way (hd600 is slightly better in that regard but it is inferior in many other ways and costs 120 euro more here). Can the copp or these do the job of the sonically wonderful k371?

Received dt250-250 today. Almost perfect after this simple mod that was posted here before. Changed for 2 rings each side without stock foam discs. Better everything. Bass extension and kick. Mids not veiled any more. No fatigue at all. Perfect tone.

Isolation is not great. Other than that yes. Had hd600 but sold because of bass roll off. Tried k371 that i did not like at all: boxy. DT250 perfect allrounder imo/ after mod:)

I got my dt250 out of storage all stripped apart, put dt150 drivers in...spent a whole night listening to them. it's bass and mid focused, and seems to extract more nuances from midrange instruments, and is overall more fun sounding.

in case you're curious, my dt250 has the silverstone dampening material applied, the plastic prongs cut out, and the silly PCB removed:

I personally call it the DT420. 20 is my own mods

I got my dt250 out of storage all stripped apart, put dt150 drivers in...spent a whole night listening to them over the dumb-fi that the HEDDphone is. HDDphone is too bright sounding, it makes me reduce volume, which results in mid and bass recessed sound. whereas the dt400 (dt250+150 drivers) is bass and mid focused, and seems to extract more nuances from midrange instruments, and is overall more fun sounding.

What sound difference does the silverstone damping material make vs stock?

It's been 4 years since I've last heard them without it, so I'm only left with a vague recollection; bass getting tighter & faster. The foam, in my limited understanding, should reduce sound wave reflections back and forth inside the cup, which some might describe as having a dark/black background - the sound is less busy, music/actual_recording is more distinct.

Very happy now. Put the foam discs in again. different material ring/ dont know if this really matters. "Veiled" was maybe just in reaction to my reference/ etymotic er2se..so convinced i went on modifying: vocals sounded slightly skewed to the right. Removed the pcb. Changed the cable for comfort/ too heavy. Removed the connector inside. Sealed with hot glue inside. Problems solved. Was that convinced then i went beyond reversible. recabled again. balanced cable double entry. Balanced only for indoor mobility with bluetooth dac amp qudelix 5k.
