I heard many times that the Headamp GS1 is the best of the best around and even above 1000$, but I've hesitated so much that it is sold out now.

I didn't want to buy an amplifier costing that much, so it was out of my price range, and actually it is still now, but I'm bored with looking for the best, so I have to stretch my budget a little bit.
Is the Emmeline HR2 still one of the best under 1000, and competitive to the GS1?
If not, what do you suggest?

the "best" would possibly be a DIY amp worth 1000usd (or even less) since you get to choose the parts and sound sig of the amp, even the case for it.

You can always see if you can find a used GS-1? I happen to think its one of the very best $1k ish amps (just under with the standard setup and just over $1k with the DACT attenuator). The Violectric V200 is another great choice.

I wouldn't recommend the Auditor (same price range) a bit too dry and lifeless and quite poor with low impedance headphones.

Or diy amp Dispre 2 JFET: http://web.telecom.cz/macura/dispre2-jfet_en.htm I do not know how it sounds because I do not have chance compare with HeadAmp etc. but it measure better then Dynahi according to this site: http://www.ibiblio.org/tkan/audio/dynahi.html so it is probably better made. And the price is pretty decent..but it is diy so it will be probably a problem.

edit: sorry I read now that PCB are not available, designer of this amp have probably a lot of work..
