Yeah; but sometimes we end up doing things a bit out of sequence if we get an extremly good deal on an item or we really like something, like a particular amp, and life ends up throwing us a curve that we have to work around.

I for one am in the "phones first" camp and feel that the cans are more likely to produce the largest variation in the final sound. But I can see how things can need to be rearanged!

....yup; been there, done that.

Wait until the amp arrives and see how it lines up with your Grado's. I would lean toward the Senn's as I am not a fan of Grado, but a tube amp might calm them down a little. The LD2+ has a bit of trouble running my 701's on real heavy/hard music, so I'd see how the other AKG's measure up to the 701's as far as impedence goes. The 601's sound very similar to the 701's and you might look into those. I also have a set of Senn HD590's (not sure how they measue up to 580's, 595's, or 600's), but they aren't really anything that special with the LD2+.

I have the LDII+ and a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-A900's

I've never heard anything like it!!! Totally mindblowing!!! I bought a pair of Beyer DT880's 2005 + Rega Amp, but it was a huge dissapointment... But after getting the A900's, my ears have been in heaven. They don't really need an amp because of low impedance, but I decided to buy the LDII+ anyway since Iæve heard so much nice about it. And OMG what a difference it made ! The sound is warm, deep and crisp as hell

It will be hard to exchange this combination for anything in the future.

Good luck with both your amp and your choice of headphones

I'm going to have to hear some ATH-A900's.... There's a stupid amount of phones I could have heard @ the NY meet but missed most of them.

I for one love the DT880 with my LDII+ and III+. I listen to the DT880s for the majority of each work day with a LD II+. (I'm a software developer so closing myself off from the world is accepted; it helps that the DT880 is one of the most comfortable phones in the world.)

You mostly listen to rock? IMO, I've never heard Led Zeppelin sound better then when listening to them through the DT880 driven by my LD III+ (which I use @ home) ... LD II+ is very similar -- not as much 'presence' and up-front-in-your-face re-production of the music as the LD III+ -- replaced instead for the LD II+ with a more relaxed ambiant version of the music reproduction while maintaining the other same characteristics from its DHT [DHP actually] power tubes. It still maintains the super wide head surrounding soundstage of the DT880; driving them quite well.

p.s. whatever you get, don't second guess the choice until you've put a good hundred or two hours on the phones and amp. Burn-in is not a myth.

weird, the LDII+ magically started working again

well the 501s now have the amplification they deserve and my ears couldnt be happier!

btw the 501s absolutely rock with tubes! its hard to believe that this is meant to be their weakest genre until you hear jazz on it:P

Headphone's plug pressed in hard enough into the amp? Take'm out and click'm in hard.

Also, the mini to 1/4" adapter that comes with the amp is absolutely horrendous ... are you using that?

I was losing connection or picking up static with it; could easily mono-out the the signal touching it. Once I got the DT880 that comes with its own adapters that screws on, never had a hint of static or lost connection again. Hoping for the best that it's something easy like that.

ive tried using three adapters.

Only the right side works on all of them but if i plug in the 501 with the LDII+ adapter to a particular depth i can hear sound coming out of both channels.

I think the problem is in the connector to the headphone jack in the LDII+ but im not sure.

The amp is also smelling quite bad, is this normal?
