Did I forget Feist and Sade in my original post?  Criminal omissions by me.

Just checked out Diana Krall....that is everything a lot of the things I hate put into one person. Achievement unlocked!

The biggest thing is the contralto voice...Katy Perry has one too but she doesn't use it all the time.

Mmm... contralto. I loves it I does. I need to check Diana Krall out now based on your "recommendation".

A long time ago I walked into a record store and the song playing in it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end - I wasn't even a jazz fan, but Diana Krall's All For You album put me under a spell.

The next time that happened was Shelby Lynne's Just A Little Lovin' - and the album sounds so good.

The more I listen to Sarah Mclachlan's Laws of Illusion, the more I like it. It's an awesome album.

The ladies who sing on Zero 7's albums are great too - Sophie Barker, Tina Dico, Sia Furler (check out Simple Things). Tina Dico has a solo album out called In The Red, and Sophie Barker guested on the amazing Bliss album Quiet Letters. On the same  - downtempo - note, early Hooverphonic is also very very nice. Check out Blue Wonder Power Milk or the classic A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular

I also like My Brightest Diamond's A Thousand Shark's Teeth quite a bit.

I think Diana Krall is really quite talented.  I saw her live 10+ years ago, and she is an outstanding pianist in addition to being a very good singer.

Which reminds me of another favorite I forgot to mention, who is a very good pianist as well as a wonderful singer - Fiona Apple.

That whole Lo-Fi/downtempo jazz movement has some amazing singers....though it was through Zero 7 that I got hooked on that genre....highly recommend the new Yeah Ghost album....
