When I was at Massdrop's offices several weeks back Will informed me that the K7xx is based on the K702 Anniversary Edition, and that's also been mentioned here in the thread. The Annie has been called superior to the Q701 by many people due to it's slightly less analytical sound resulting from a moderate bass boost. So if you're looking for more detail then maybe the Q701 would be the ones to keep. But if you're wanting a little bit more on the low end that results in a headphone that's better for more genres overall then you'll want to check out the K7xx. The Annie is available from Amazon for $379 and if the K7xx does indeed have a sound that almost mirrors the Annie then $200 is an absolute no-brainer for me. I'll be keeping an eye on these for sure.
 
Also, some people hate the Q701 bumps. I'm not one of them, but there is that to consider.

i have been eying the K712 Pro's for a long time as the GYTW heard some K701's and said "i want these." (and Audeze LCD 3's to boot.) 

 
that said, i am in for this drop like s**** on s***!

How good is the leather headband? Never owned a headphone with a leather headband and this will also be my first AKG headphone......
 
so in regards to quality, does it last long or does it have a replacement for it?
 
Plus, for being the first edition, will they bring out a second edition later on and would it be improved?
I would say probably not but who knows...

I've never owned an AKG just due to the fact it looks so BIG. Anyone have any insights to how this would sound to someone like me who is just used to the warm sound of Sony.

Should have got this instead.
Would have saved me a lot of dough!!

since my 65th Annies are made in Austria obviously...

I am wondering the same but about the K712 which I have had for several months.  I wonder if it sounds the same and the only difference is the price, color, 1 less cable and that the K7XX is NOT made in Austria.

The pair I have here is serial number 5. I know there are a few more demo units floating around, so I'm not sure how that factors into thing. The page says the first 250 customers are guaranteed a serial under 300, which leaves some wiggle room I guess.

I agree that the K601/701 family has always been a very large headphone. It doesn't necessarily look all that huge in pics but it really is big. Unlike Audeze, the size doesn't translate to weight, and it's still quite comfy.

Not sure how this model will influence priced on used 65th Editions. I imagine sound and build are very close, despite the different locations. Then again I think the later 65th runs had angled pads so that could be a factor.

I'm gonna order them. Call me crazy but Massdrop specifically state each driver is hand tuned and balanced to match the other for the closest signature and they've tweaked more than just the 3dB boost the pads give going by the description. I need to hear them for myself.

I already have the modded Q701 so will be interesting to see where they differ in person.
