The AKG K712 Pro Support and Impressions Thread

I love the K712. I was also looking at the K/Q 702 but the bumps looked like they'd be an issue from a comfort standpoint. I'm actually wearing the K712 right now with no music on and I barely notice them.  Sound wise they are analytical and can be unforgiving on bad recordings. It's my understanding that the K/Q702 is the same way though. I haven't listened to any other headphones to compare the K712 to though.

I'm using some Amperex Orange Globes that I found on eBay for $40 for 4. The original had a horrible ringing sound in them, it went away when I rolled the OGs in. There's a Lyr tube rolling thread here on Head-fi that has a bunch of info.

I just wrote a review of the K712 here: http://www.head-fi.org/products/akg-k712-pro/reviews/10344

Amp note: those considering the Schiit Lyr might want to look into the cheaper Garage1217 Project Ember instead, especially if you intend on tube-rolling. I imploded a tube on the Lyr once (because they're too hard to easily remove) and sort of just crushed it under my fingers. The Project Ember makes it much easier to roll tubes. I wrote a review of it too: http://www.head-fi.org/products/garage1217-project-ember-hybrid-headphone-amplifier-preamp/reviews/10302

Good read. Are you contending the K712's sonics are distinctly different than the K702 AE then?

Sort of hard to say, which is why I left that nebulous on purpose and didn't say much about it. They could possibly be different but I can't say exactly how. If you want a K712 vs K702 65th Anniversary comparison, that's going to have to be provided by someone else, not me.

I wish to test the K712 too T.T and I'm finding someone whose nearby me [Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia/Brunei] who have one and willing to lent it to me xD

the way that you describe it is exactly like the tuning on the k545 and what they did to it coming from the k550....upper mids, increased bass but still not a thumper.

I knew I was right about the k712 being the k545 big and open brother.

The k545 is a great headphone but as someone who loves the hd650 i suspect it may not be the flavor for me. I purchased it after craving more soundstage than an lcd2. It will be here tomorrow so I will see.

Well written, I'd have to concur, especially the lack of very low bass but it isn't a deal breaker for me.  It's flaws are entirely forgivable at it's pricepoint and it's plenty satisfying for me having owned several different top flagships then having to downgrade for budget reasons.  I'm currently dirving it with a Soloist which seems to do well, but I'll have a chance to audition the ember as well at an upcoming meet in April.

Also agreed that it's hard to say having owned both.  Just from memory I enjoy the K712 much more but I didn't have the Soloist driving the K702 65th at the time, so it' could be simply an issue of amplification.  It does seem fairly sensitive to the chosen downstream components.

Fair enough.

I compared them directly for a few days, and for me the K712 came out sounding a little bassier (both mid and sub).

I trust your ears more than mine. I am probably wrong there and I believe you. I like its bass quantity and can't complain. Overall I prefer the hd650 as a headphone and that is definitely coloring my opinion right now

I admit i probably posted that hastily..

I just thought I remember the hd650 having more mid bass than this. and this right now sounds more neutral across the bass from mid to sub. Also the lower mids sound recessed to me.

Also with my amp/source its not even fair for me to comment. but while I am building a new set up I figured that I can atleast see if its worth building one around. But certain things I know about it wont change.  I am just not feeling the whole far out soundstage with no depth thing and right now I just learned a lesson the hard way by purchasing them.

They have tons of qualities I really like but overall I guess I prefer a dx700 soundstage to an akg k7XX one. Things sound a bit thin for me though compared to the x1 the instruments are larger and more realistic.

I dont know whatever.

The bass on the AKGs can be quite system dependent, it's possible they may not simply be for you. Sounds like you like intimate sounding headphones. I get the feeling you would probably like the K612 more than the K712 going by your complaints of the K712 as the K612 is quite a bit more intimate and has better imaging and depth to it's sound imo.
