What is it about 5.1 headphones that appears funny?
are they just a marketing gimmick or do they really work?

And why are popular brands like Sennheiser, AKG, denon etc not making such headphones?

can someone break the myth for all of us?

I have tried the Razer HP-1 (8 drivers) with my AC-1 sound card. I didn't feel any difference than using regular 2 driver headphones. I didn't feel that my music was more surround sound. Perhaps those work best with games and movies.

You can't hear 5.1 with one driver at each ear like that... It simply doesn't work with headphones.

To have 5.1 you would have to be able to hear all around you if you know what I mean.

Standard music isnt 5.1, you would have to listen to a 5.1 source like movies or games to be able to notice a difference.

With headphones like those, I find them all to be extremely uncomfortable. After trying a pair of Beyerdynamic cans, I tried out my old pair of Razer Barracuda 5.1 phones and my god it was a real torture. I couldn't believe that I used them for some time before moving to "higher end" audio. I wouldn't be able to live without my Darth Beyers because they are so comfy!

like someone mentioned before, music comes out of 2 channels, the companies you mentioned focus primarily on headphones for music.

I had the Tritton AX360s awhile back. Even my Q40s are WAY better for gaming.

Yeah, they're trying to cram several drivers in the same space that companies stick one larger driver. The quality of the drivers in good stereo headphones are quite a bit better than those in surround phones.

As for surround, its not that important to me. I've never really been immersed into a surround signal on speakers. I prefer the clarity and detail I get from good headphones. Also, the intimacy of headphones really improves non-action scenes to my ears. That, and binaural or holophonic recordings are just as good if not better, although obviously the amount of content recorded thusly is pretty limited. Dolby Headphone and Creative's CMSS-3D Headphone (on the X-Fi, where they finally implemented Aureal's technology from several years back) do a decent (some people are wowed, others like it less) job of simulating that. Oh, and really good headphones tend to offer their own manner of immersing you in the sound with good soundstage and spatial placement.

Hopefully Smyth's surround technology can reach a mass audience somehow, as the feedback on it has been very positive.

Personally for me, headphones sound great, regardless. I've never been bothered by the extreme channel separation (except on certain recordings which were mixed in an odd manner, such as all the vocals on one side and the instruments on the other, things like that) or any other issues that seem to bother some listeners (not saying their viewpoint isn't valid, it just doesn't apply to me).

Most of the cost of the headphones would be related to the driver so in a pair of $200 headphones one could expect to pay at least 150 for the drivers. Therefore in a pair of 5.1 headphones you have 6 different drivers mean each driver would be $25 in value however in a pair of $200 stereo headphones there are only 2drivers meaning each driver is worth $75.

Another problem is that the drivers are all so close together that it can cause distortion in the sound.
