Having had a dig around, I don't see any recent thread devoted solely to techno and its ilk - so I thought I'd start one I'm big into electronic music generally, but techno is king! Hopefully there are a few more like-minded techno heads on here, otherwise it'll be a short-lived thread...

EDIT: Since it first started, the scope of this thread has expanded well beyond techno. The main aim here is to have a place to share links; new stuff or old, and any electronic sub-genre, just nothing too mainstream. No brostep, poppy EDM (in fact anyone caught using the term 'EDM' will be subject to summary execution) or super star DJs - it's about shining a light on less widely celebrated producers.

P.S. Some tech house should be included too, since it's often hard to distinguish the two in today's globalized music world, where styles have blended.
 
It really surprises me that there aren't that many dedicated techno listeners here and also how many people on this site listen to lazily-produced mainstream "radio" music. Dig a little deeper and find the underground producers who are doing it for music's sake.

Yes yes big up fellas. It's odd isn't it.. There doesn't seem to be many into the underground beats on here. Its some of the best produced music in the world, imo. Loved that first tune you linked us on R&S.

Hell yeah, Drexciya were the business. There was a four disc compilation out a couple of years ago - Journey of the Deep Sea Dweller - the remastering is great, really shines up this old gold!

Detroit was also my gateway into techno, though I believe Gesamtkunstwerk by Dopplereffekt was my first album of the genre.
Dopplereffekt is mainly Gerald Donald, who of course was one half of Drexciya, so I eventually made my way to them, and onwards to UR and the rest of the Detroit (and Chicago) scene.

Lately I've been working my way through Jeff Mills' discography.
 

 
I have many passions, and I rarely manage to keep them apart. What makes me the most happy is when people manage to fuse techno with industrial, electro and house in interesting ways, which is why I think the Detroit and Chicago (and to a slightly lesser extent London and Berlin) underground is so interesting.

Being a Brit, I spose I've always been a bit biased towards the UK scene + only started to discover the Detroit sound in more recent times. My gateway into techno would have to be:



Probably the first proper single (i.e. not some daft novelty pop record) I ever bought and a musical epiphany at the time - subsequently went on to discover FSOL's influences of course, but at the time it seemed like a bolt from the blue.

Nice, but definitely more house than techno. Major giveaway is that it's basically a spruced up disco track. Makes sense as house evolved pretty directly out of disco.
 
Techno is a bit different, as there are no clear artistic predecessors (inspirators, yes, but no direct link). It was more of a response to social changes that suddenly had hit people and the communities hard (remember, this is the american 'rust belt' we're talking about). It is no coincidence that Jeff Mills decided to make a soundtrack for Fritz Langs Metropolis, neither is it a coincidence that most of techno is pretty dark, dirty and slightly unnerving.

Yeah, I'd go along with that. House and techno are obviously closely related, both being 4 4 based, but I tend to look at it as sliding scales of heat and light - generally speaking, house is towards the lighter, warmer end of the spectrum while techno tends towards the dark and the cold. I'm a big fan of both personally; they're truly enduring forms of electronic music - other fads come and go, but house and techno abide.
