Tape Deck as DAC?!
Jul 23, 2015 at 11:14 AM Post #3 of 6
Hi people, so, I'm new here in Head-Fi and my first question would be: Can I use a Technics Tape Deck (old one I think) as a DAC?

Digital To Analogue Converter. Tape players are already analog. Unless you're talking DAT here there isn't even any way of connecting anything, and even with DAT, afaik there aren't any inputs - they just read a tape with digital audio encoded.

The thing is that It has a rca input. Can I plug my phone (which is digital) and listen using headphones plugged directly into the tape deck? Will the output be analog if I press the record and play buttons?

No.

You need to do some basic research on audio equipment.

You mean two RCA inputs, Left and Right? That is not a Digital input, so there's not going to be any Digital to Analogue Conversion. All you will do is run the (very) slightly noisy analog headphone output from a phone through another analog device to pick up some noise, making everything more complicated to achieve the exact opposite of what you should be aiming for.

The smart phone is a digital source, but it already has a Digital to Analogue Converter in it. If it was sending out a digital audio signal from its headphone output then how the heck is it that you can hear actual music from it? You can't hear  music in 11101000101000001010101010101010010000000010010101100000010100101011010000000111 format. Unless...are you on the Nebuchadnezzar?! Tank can tell what sort of people are walking past Neo just by looking at those, with no graphics card to show him a 3D rendering.
