I decided to refinish my banged-up wooden longboard before school starts, so I took off all the grip tape, and now I have tons of goop on it, that has to come off. (it's actually really grippy right now...I just stood on it in socks and almost fell over because my feet were stuck...p)

Any favorite chemicals? I'm sure there's a good way to get it off.

Also, any recommendations on a nice flexible finish for it?

im not sure how great this will be for the finish, but this is how i clean tape glue off of my knives...
first try windex, or a similar cleanser.
spray it on THICK and let it sit for a moment or 2.
then go to town with papaer towels.
it usually takes 2 or 3 tries, but you can see the gunk go away more each time.

I found some stuff called "goo be gone" that works well w/wood surfaces. I had some sticky stuff all over one of my window sills & I had tried everything I could think of to get it off. This stuff did the trick & didn't hurt the paint. I think I found it at Walgreens - a little bottle w/yellow colored liquid.

Try Goof Off- you'll find it at Home Depot or Lowe's. Also, you can try nail polish remover, denatured alcohol or mineral spirits. But the Goof Off should do the trick.

What about Isopropyl Alcohol?
I used it on my mp3 player case, but that was only a little sticky spot. Anyone have experience of how well does it work on other sticky residue?

Goo Off

plain old acetone will remove any goo & grease. you probably can't buy it strait up in stores but it's used in fingernail polish remover. just don't drench your skin in it, cause it will dry the oil right out and make your skin extremely dry. naphtha is another good cleaning solvent that can be found in ronsonal lighter fluid. and of course if nothing else good old isopropyl alcohol can do the job too. basically, between a bottle of fingernail polish, lighter fluid, and alcohol you can clean anything

x2 for naptha. Nothing works quite as well as Zippo fluid. Goo Gone is ok, but less effective. Any spirit alcohol will do the trick.

And congrats on breaking out the longboard. I haven't ridden mine since fall 2005. I miss it. Gonna have to wait til spring now too.
