At approximately 10:30 AM, I'm going to being the process of installing Ubuntu Linux on my computer. That said, I know my 0404 isn't going to work, so I need some other solution for sound. I can always rip my old AV-710 out of my parents' computer, but I won't have the chance to do that for about another week.

So is the AV-710 a good choice? I know people have gotten it to work under Linux, but you all must understand that I'm a complete retard when it comes to any OS other than Windows.

And to please, no comments about my choice of distro (because I know there are some Linux geeks that are just waiting to reccommend something other than Ubuntu).

The AV-710 works wonderfully in Linux. Ubuntu has really good hardware detection, so it should work fine.

Welcome to the Cult of the Penguin, my dear Jigglybootch. *evil cackle*

Well, the deed is done. I'm running Ubuntu at the moment, and I don't have a frickin' clue what I'm doing. It's like 1996 all over again (the first time I used a computer). As expected, I have no sound, but that will all hopefully change when I get my hands on that AV-710. Right now I'm more concerned with upgrading to the latest version of Firefox, but it's being a person.

For another non rpm based distro, you can create your own using conary and rBuilder. It isnt rpm based, and doesnt share some of the shortcomings of apt (particularly for 64bit systems.

I've got GREAT sound coming from my chaintech av710. couldn't be happier. I've been at it about 7 months now, and feel pretty confident in saying using ADS advice on how to use the hi res wolfson DAC is the easiest/best step you can take.

p.s. yeah, upgrading to firefox 1.5.+ can be a hassle
p.s.s the ubuntu wiki is important too for installing the win32codecs (which you cannot be without to enjoy multimedia)

Hi guys - I desperately need help! I was running Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy and for the life of me I could not get the the AV-710 recognized. So I upgraded to the Dapper development release and still no luck.

In Device Manager there is an entry for "VT1720/24 [Envy24PT/HT] PCI Multi-Channel Audio Controller" but under the PCI tab it says:

OEM Vendor: Illegal Vendor ID
OEM Product: Unknown (0xffff)

When I run alsaconf (version 1.0.10) it seems to find "VIA Technologies Inc. VT1720/1724..." and it seems to through the process like its doing something but in the end I get no sound - no nothing!

I am fairly new at Linux (1 month) but have worked with Windows/DOS etc forever at a technical level so am fairly comfortable with Linux right now. Any ideas as to what I could try to get my sound working would be really apreaciatted.

Thanks

If you want to post me the output of lspci -n and lspci -vv that would be helpful (possibly in a pm). Also try modprobe to run snd-ice1724 and see if that makes the card available please. I dont run ubuntu, but it is possible that the pci id is missing from hardware detection, so their tools do not know what driver to load for this card.

I thought I'd post a follow-up - through persistence and searching my sound card is now working.

I applied this firmware patch to my soundcard:
http://www.audiotrak.net/download/DR.../eeprom(2).zip

This firmware patch basically changed my pci.subsys_vendor string to something that the drivers recognize. Here is new info from lspci:

$ lspci -d 1412:1724 -nvx
0000:04:07.0 0401: 1412:1724 (rev 01)

Thanks to all for helping.
