We all know and love the original Darth Beyers - the DT770 recabled and tweaked by Headphile:

But Tagosaku has taken it a step further. The 770 is like Darth Maul - wild and out of control. Let's smooth this out without losing the Sith groove. That's right - DT880 Darth Beyers!

Mr. Vader, your cans are here. But we aren't done. Tagosaku also decided to give the mild mannered K501 the same treatment. Um, the Darth C-3PO?

I'd really love to give this can a try! Tagosaku needed some help hosting the pics, so here they are - fresh from Larry's workbench to Tagosaku to your eyeballs. I can't wait for Tagosaku to share his impressions. One last pic for the road!

Hah, weird! your DT880 and K501 both have cables in both cans.. Which mine does not. I just happen to have a pair of DT880 on loan and I own K501. Both of them only have the cable connected to the left can only.

EDIT: Also the 880's I got on loan has this "phone cable spiral thingy" going on.. Which I'm not so impressed with. Mostly it's just annoying.

Hi tagosaku,

Looks impressive! How did k501 change after cable mod? I always felt that k501 could use little mod. Any deeper bass extension? How much was the mod? I see the price at headphile.com.

Haha, I like your comments Jahn, and sense a deja-vu when I see these all again. They all are nice cans indeed, post mod IMO. I sure wouldn't want to have to choose between them, but am happy with my own modded 770/80's. May the force be with you...

BigD,

I agree with your thinking, but decided to give it a try anyway.
The cable is far from burn in, but the change is noticable. Nothing particular like DT-880's high being smoother. And no added bass to K-501 like it did to DT-880.
However, it feels like the sweetness is deeper. Since I recieved it, it's pretty much been glued on me.

Please contact headphile for price. Sounded like K-501 was a lot of work for Larry, so not sure if it will be part of the regular menu like DT-880.

Now who says only the hd600/hd650 owners have all the fun?

Finally, k501 and dt880 could play fair game against cable-mod hd580/6xx. Please post some impression on both cans after extensive burn-in. Looking forward to see how they fare against senn siblings.
