I'm totally shocked by this because they are normally not my type of music/band at all.

However the girlfriend is a fan and has been playing it a lot. And to my amazement I am enjoying it. I especially like "BYOB" and "Violent Pornography".

It seems to me that they succeeded where Mars Volta did not.

So now the question am i just crazy and or blinded by my affection for her or is this actually some worthwhile music?

It's always interesting to get this type of response since, for me this was the first time that I really paid attention to the band.

I did go back and listen to both the self titled album and Toxicity. I did not care for them too much. They do sound quite different than mesmerize.

So i guess i can see if you were a fan of the former how you might not like the current.

For me, mesmerize succeeds at what Mars Volta was trying for with Frances The Mute. I did not care for Frances. I liked the "comatorium" much better however

To each his own i guess, thanks for the input

Have the exact same feelings as the original poster. Not normally into this type of music. Bought it after reading newsweek article on the band. Love the album. Especially violent pornography and cigaro.

I think Mesmerize is a damn good album. Not quite as good as Toxicity but still rocks like a mother. Some people seem to have a problem with the increased vocal time of guitarist Daron Malakian but I think his voice sounds good with Serj's. I also enjoy the goofyness factor - these guys make music fun.

Everytime I listen to Mesmerize I can't help but smile and bob my head. Not to mention the fact that I get the urge to sing along, to the misfortunate of others.

My favourite tracks are currently Radio/Video, Violent Pornography and B.Y.O.B. Can't wait for Hypnotize to come out!

Agreed, although toxicity is clearly my favourite album. Didnt like mesmerize that much.

The vocals are fun, and in some songs they have such random lyrics "Wired were the eyes of a horse on a jet pilot".

I agree. As much as I like soad. I think that this album was kind of dissapointing. Toxicity is one of the few albums out that I like every track of.

What style is it? I find their earliest stuff (especally live bootlegs and demos) to be my favourites, because back then they had fun. Toxicity seemed (to me) to be more charged with anger instead of fun. (though i still love toxicity) Whereas the self-title is so fun, it's like ... umm... "teeniebopper metal" haha.

So what genre/mood/whatever is Mesmerize?

thanks.

I quite like mezmerize, even though toxicity and the self-titled one really are
better. I wonder how the hypnotize'll turn out to be.

I wonder where Steal this album is in this conversation.
