saw a pana sx400 japanese model in good condition with only a minor scratch on the lid for $29.00 in a local pawn shop. It had a lighted remote, optical out and selectable eq (norm. sbx & train).
Looks like a quality unit.
Can anyone give some feedback on this model.
I forgot to see if it had a line out ; or does the opt. out double as a line out?

Hi,
I knew the SX500, but I have no clue about the sx400. I suspect it to be a good cd player. It is the 1998 model, right. I think it is capable of good performance. For 29 dollars, I think it is good. Is the chassis made by Aluminum? If "yes" let me know.

SL-SX400 was not sold in the U.S. market.
The main difference is the digital output.

The SL-SX300 and SL-SX500 were sold in the U.S. market and had a regular line-out, not a digital out.

The SL-SX500 was a good quality player with good sound.
For $29, the SL-SX400 is probably worth picking up.
Even if you don't use it, I am sure someone here on head-fi will buy it from you.

Not really, I got my SX-500 for 50 dollars, from my friend. In a perfect condition too, jealous?

sorry guys, had to pass on the sx400. the chassis was not aluminum but flimsy plastic not up to sony standards.
The remote did not control on or off or fast forward or reverse. Not a big deal but my sony remote does it all even tho I don't use remote that often.
the sound was quite good but again not as loud and solid in the low end as my DT-401 or D-303. I used the er4 but wish I would have taken the super mini with me and tried the line out.

Robertr,
Panasonic SL-SX400 won't impress you in the line out department, b/c you already have the D-303.

Yeh I know -the 303 is my holy grail but for headphone out without the mini the 401 is more powerful. I don't know of any pcdp that can beat it for output. maybe someday I'll hear a D-25.

Just found my sx400 in a dusty corner and I need to correct you on the remote for others researching on this model. The remote has a small LCD screen with a cool blue backlight and 5 buttons and wheel for volume. The buttons are for 1) fast forward, 2)reverse, 3)repeat, 4)backlight/hold and 5)ON/OFF/play/stop.

So maybe the player you saw did not come witht the original remote.

I have had my SX400 for over 5 years now. Vance is describing the factory-original remote that came with it.

This a damn good portable player. My mom dropped it on concrete floor and it still works. In fact, it's being used when I am on the treadmill.
