Well, I did it again... after having a decent portable amp and a couple decent headphone jacks on receivers, I've realized that I just don't like the overall sound signature on the AKG K240S as much as I thought I did. I ended up swapping them out at GC for a pair of Senn HD280's. To me, the Senns sound brighter, with less mid-bass, but alot more loooow end than the AKG's. Sound seems more concentrated and more impact than the AKG's, which sound a little "mushy", even amped (although when amped the K240S's do tighten up quite a bit).
Overall I just like this sound alot better. Plus, when amped, I like the HD280's ALOT more than I did when I owned them before and was going ampless. The HD280's are a good alternative to the Beyer DT770/80's I have, which have a bigger soundstage, warmer, more speaker-like sound, more of an analog-ish sound, whereas the HD280's seem more tight sounding, good low low end (no mud at all, just that low end floor), brighter up top, slightly forward mids-- overall a little more "digital" sounding compared to the Beyers-- great for certain types of music.
In the end, got a good price on the HD280's, and something better suited for bedtime listening when the significant other is trying to sleep (the HD280's keep ALL the sound in-- it's amazing how little sound leaks out).
Anyway, just thought I'd share some good headphone news...
