My primary use will be for my living room for tivo/TV and bluray player/movies. Content will be mostly in digital DD and DTS. In room is my Dennon 989 receiver. I have D5000 open box headphones on order but I'm wondering if there was a better headphone available that can handle surround sound since I don't believe that the phono plug out of 989 will pass surround sound. Important to me also is some leval of isolation noise cancellation since my apartment is close to road and sometimes I'll be wearing headphones instead of speakers so I don't have to hear traffic.

Sell off your Denon (have nothing against Denon) and buy a Yamaha, Yamaha's come with Silent Cinema, which is surround sound for headphones.

That sounds like an extreme and expensive solution.

If anyone has listened to headphones fed a surround sound (especially a Dennon 1000 series) please comment on how much better it makes listening experience for DTS audio movies I'd apreciate it. I believe my Dennon 989 receiver has a pretty beefy amp which should suit D5000 well.

If your Denon 989 has an optical digital output, you could try an Astro mix-amp.

I'ts a modern receiver with HDMI and HD-audio support so yes it has optical. It supports-* 115 watts per channel x 7 channels 8 Ohm, 20Hz-20kHz, 0.08% which was more power than most amps I thought, making  it a good match for D5000 headphones. My 989 receiver is hooked up to some pretty beefy speakers which I also sometimes use and sound pretty good I think.

Im curious about proposed  Astro mix-amp solution if anyone else has opinions about it..
