I've been looking at Alienwares (to replace my Macbook; the Alienwares have a little more power in a tighter package than the Vaios). I'm confronted for the first time with a "front", "center", and "surround" jack, as well as optical "TOSlink". The programming term I'd use is "mux".... is there an amp that can, uh, mux the audio into something my headphones can produce?
Ah, wikipedia to the rescue. Apparently the term is "multiplex." Huh.
Is there a multiplexing amp that can handle surround output and generate an approximation of that, which I can use in my headphones? I'm not opposed to buying new cans if required. Also, while I do move the laptop around quite a bit, it spends 8-10 hours a day sitting on my desk, which is where the amp would live. As opposed to in my briefcase.
