I currently own

MDR-V300
MDR-V500
PX100

And listen on

Iriver H340
Laptop

The 300's did not really hack it for me so i got the 500's they have been fine and doing there job well until they developed a loose connection in the right ear. So now i am thinking of an upgrade, i will get the sony's replaced under warrenty and normally that would be fine but since i have spent time using my PX100's and a workmates HD265 Linear's i have wanted some much improved headphones.

They have to be closed as the will get loads of use in work and travelling.
I do like a good amount of bass as i listen to alot of beats but also loads of rock.

So i am thinking what should i get?

From my reading on the forum the AKG K271S sound like a good candidate, am i right? is there any others i should be looking at?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

I don't think the K271S necessarily fits the bill for your requirements. Not really a good travel headphone, and you may dislike the tight but lean bass (Philodox, feel free to chime in

). Also, the K271S really needs an amp, so you'd need to factor that in to your equation.

You may want to look into the Sennheiser HD 25-1. Also, do you have any interest in canalphones?

DT770-80... but IMHO it needs an amp to really shine.

MDRV6 if youre on a tighter budget, or dont want to use an amp. Theyre decently portable too. Certainly more portable than the DT770 or K271

Thanks for advice guys, a few years ago i did have a pair of HD-25's and i did really enjoy them so they should still be on my list i guess?

My budget is around $300 but if i can get great headphone cheaper i don't care how much they cost. They don't need to be major portable as they will be used at work 95% of the time. Also one of my friends in making me a headphone amp as he knows his electronics and said he would make me an amp for my birthday and the first prototype is nearly ready so it should be interesting!

Is there certain type of cans that are more suited to certain types of music, i'm guessing there is? If so i listen to alot of rock and house music.

If they don't need to be portable and your budget is USD 300, then strike the HD 25-1 of your list. You can do better.
