I plugged some Mackie HR824mk2's into my Benchmark DAC1, and they pretty much blow the HD650's out of the water. Can anyone recommend a set of headphones that will compete?

Apples to oranges. Speakers to headphones. What you ask is far out. Try the K1000 if you want speakerlike headphones.

Obviously, the speakers will have a larger physical presence.
What I'm asking for is clarity, detail and balance. I thought the K701's had too much treble, but maybe I will try them again.

You could try giving the HD650 a proper headphone amplifier, no high end headphone is ever going to reach its best running from the DAC1 amp.

Not if you're willing to pick up a soldering iron. Build something like a Beta 22 or a Dynamid/Gilmore Reference and your Senns will perk up. You can build either for a few hundred.
