Was having a look at this earlier,i am only just getting over the wow factor of running NE5534OBCA for the first time today and now it looks like Xin may be moving the goalposts a little more already

Today I modified my two SM's to be a pre-power combo (SM3 with NE5534OB as Pre and SM3 with 2XBUF634's as Power amp). The sound is really amazing. Compared to an integrated SM3, the sound out of the pre-power combo is obviously faster and puchier and clearer articulation on every single notes. While the idea is cool, two high quality IC's are required to obtain the benefit of seperated amp stages.

I already own two SMs without any volume control, i.e. basically the "power amp" approach as described by XIN. That's very good & practical.

Does any of you giys know if it's really necessary to run the Opamps in "output bypass" (OB) AND at the same time in Class A (CA) mode?

Up to now I thought it's either, or.

OB mode for opamps like 744 or 5534, i.e. push pin 5 in the hole of pin 6 and do away with pin 6.

CA mode for opamps that do not support OB mode, e.g. 627, 637 etc. Those would need the XIN adapter that forces them into Class A.

Now I seem to read statements that ppl are combining the two modes above. I am confused. What's the deal?
