Like the title says (and for the same price), what are the major pros and cons of the Supermacro 3 verus the [brand-new] HeadAmp AE-1?

Use would be portable with an ipod/line-out, with Beyer 250-250, Senn HD 580, and AKG K501.

thanks, people.

Well, judging from the specs, the AE-1 should win the battery life-time war by a wide margin.

It is also cheaper.

But then you can't roll op amps to fit your tastes with the AE-1...

The AE-1 is considerably larger, too.

Yeah, the battery life is tempting.

The web-site for AE-1 lists: Chassis Dimensions 2.75 (L) x 3.5 (W) x 1.1 (H) inches. And for the SM3: Size: 3.25x2.125x0.91 in

Not sure what you meant when you said cheaper -- I thought they both list for $349.

As for sonic differences, I guess we have to wait until more people start hearing the AE-1......

I've heard both the SM-3 and the AE-1 and preffered the AE-1 by quite a large margin. I don't remember what opamp was in the SM-3 but the AE-1 sounded fast and transparent.
