I'm not sure if I'm reading this correctly, but it seems like the Evo is VASTLY different from the 681, which kinda makes me think...Can anyone confirm this? I'm quite happy with the "general" tone of the 681, only the treble could need some tweaking.

If you want EVO to be good you also need to mod it with filter or use EQ. HD-681 harsh treble can be also "sweetened" by filter (mkII or mk3).
They both need filter mod, so, whats the difference? Mainly price, looks and comfort.

I wouldn't dare doing mods like that, I am really no tinkerer

Looks like I'll just have to order it and hear for myself. I live in Germany and thus I can send them back simply for disliking them.

Then it`s easy for you to deal with thomann  668b is also an option or better yet, I would go for HD-330 ...very good reviews and probably going to get them too.

For those that don't want to tinker.  In my opinion the 681 Evo needs nothing except a good long burn-in and removal of felt pads.  Give it a strict diet of 120 hours of music and about 30 hours of pink noise and you're all set.  Also, you can remove the extra felt in each earpad which is extremely easy to do. That's it, that is all that is needed to make these sound great.

I don't have the HD330 but the HD660 which is basicly the closed version of the HD330 and according to headfonia has somewhat more control sound. Compare to HD681(both EVO and red), the HD660 got nothing better except mid range, if you like sweet, foward mid range go for HD330, otherwise, HD681 is better.
The red 681 and EVO have different tone even after mod but have compareable sound quality, if you don't want to mod, go for Evo, if you can do the filter, the red 681 is slightly better to my ears.

The regular 681 (not the balanced or the front-row) + AKG 240 velour pads is the best Superlux HP, with a huge margin. I have the Evo (modded and not modded), 662, 662F, 660, 661, 381, had the DJ, and have compared them a hundred times. The 662F is a very-very good HP too, almost as good, but the Evo is inferior, it lacks resolution and its bass isn't just controlled enough, it's that simple. The 681 is simply fantastic, not just for the price. Imo, with the velour pads, its mids shine and timbre is comparable to old Senns. Bass is controled and impactful. With a lil wider soundstage, it would be in the same league as the Q701. For 20 Euros... Crazyness...

I am waiting on delivery of the 681 null. Have the 681b, 681f and 668b and prefer the 681b by a small margin to a re-cabled and velour-padded 668b. 668b does sound smooth, though. Just lacks a bit of detail and sound-stage to the 681's.

They are made in China and I get them here on TaoBao for 11 to 13 Euros...

I have totally opposite oppinion on the 668B, it's has the largest soundstage from all superlux cans, i do some mod (pad lifter and remove the thin felt in the cup) <-- these mod make the soundstage incredible large, easily compareable to AD700, the 668B is not smooth at all, in fact it has thin, recessed mid and sound dry, there is a peak at 7khz make it sound grainy and harsh, detail is better than 681.

Wish you had HD-330 to compare because I`m really interested in it vs. modded HD-681. HD-660 doesn`t give impression of HD-330 imo. Would like to have head-to-head comparing. As far as I`ve read HD-330 is very good for vocals and string/percussive music due to "boosted" mids - and great mids are what most of us want! And soundstage should also be be larger than HD-660 due semi-open design. And what I really like about that HP is that it`s well built and doesn`t require much modding (pads are about personal taste anyway) and no filter mod required. Only cable needs changing imo. And the price is also very good.

My 668b's have velour ear cups, thinner foam pad, and a cable mod.

Forgot to ask... what do you say about 662F vs. 662(red)? 662F with filter mod is very very good neutral-sided well balanced & analytical but for music enjoyment it`s littlebit bass "shy".
Was thinking to buy 662 red for moving around because of better & deeper bass extension but can`t decide between 662 vs. 662B.
