I've been using a Total Airhead with UM2's and am not satisfied. Not convinced the sound is improved other than the crossfeed. I'm looking for a portable amp that would be more suitable to the UM2's, leaning towards Super Macro or AE-1, although I'm sure AE-1 doesn't have crossfeed. Suggestions anybody?

I haven't heard the AE-1 but from reports most people like it. I have heard the SM V1 - V3 with the UM2's and it does a very fine job. Now with the new version coming out in the SM V5 with more options than one can imagine and sound as good or better than the V3 and the ability to configure to almost any sound you want . . . well I am looking forward to purchasing a V5.

I have the AE-1 and it is a great sounding amp. I have paired it with the Grado SR-125, RS-1, the Ety Er6i and the Senn 600. You will not be disapointed with the AE-1.

On a final note I believe in the KISS (keep it simple s...) so the less bells and wistles the better to me.

I bought my brother AE-1 + UM2 -- he is VERY happy with this combo, and likes it more than other combos he has tested (AE-1 + Shure E4, AE-1 + Shure E5c etc).

No experience with other portable amps though.

I'd say you probably couldn't go wrong either way...I know xin offers 30 day guarantee, justin probably does as well...try one, then the other...

I was all set to check out on the AE-1 and figured it might be a good idea to look at the return policy, which is in very small print at the bottom of the selection page. All sales are final, product made be exchanged for upgrade...blah,blah,blah. Don't think I'm willing to risk $350 on something I don't have a 30-day guaranteed return policy. How about the Headroom Micro?

It surprises me that it would be all sales are final since you cannot go to a store and give it a listen. I won't buy if there is no period to audition. Too bad as there a number of people who have posted right here how good it sounds. The SR71 or its new brother offer a listening period as well as a few others. Xin is coming out with the V3 Mini that will have some nice features and it might be worth a look.

accually, if you read the website more carefully it says Quote:

The AE-1, Gilmore Lite, and GS-1 Amplifiers and power supplies can be returned within 14 days for a full refund minus shipping cost, no questions asked. Sales are final on all other products. All products may be exchanged within 30 days for upgrade to an equal or higher model.

so as far as i can see, you have 14 days to return it

That sounds reasonable and more of what I would have thought. So many good amps to choose from. This is much different than the portables of a few years ago.

I use AE-1 with UM2 and Karma. It is a very good combination. The instrument seperation is great and bass is tight. It has improved the soundstage in subtle ways. Only thing is that you have to allow it to burn in for atleast 100 hrs. Intially it will sound flat.. But after burn in it is awesome
