Hey guys first time posting on these forums. I'm relatively new to the world of IEMs, i've owned the Shures E2c and the Etymotic ER-6i. After a recent birthday (friday) i've decided its time to step it up to the higher models (around $200US). I'm looking for a phone that can perform pretty darn well across the board of genres, from jazz to rock to R&B, with controlled, but present bass. i've pretty much narrowed my choices down to the Super. fi 5 pro and the shure new SE line. i'm open to other suggestions though, such as etymotic.

what do you recommend for an IEM around this price that performs well across the board? thank you!

maybe people are hesitant to jump in here because this is potentially an infinite thread. - I own the superfi5pro and like them a lot. I also have etymotics (and AKGs) and am always tempted to try other gear. I think the new shure models are a good bet, read the forum discussions, see what people look for/listen for in IEMs, then pull the trigger.

Funny you should ask. I just posed a very similar question just now. We can lament together. I would avoid the SE line personally, especially for jazz. It's fine -- good even -- for R&B and soul, from my experience.

And happy birthday!

I own the super.fi 5's and when I got them, I absolutely loved them, they were a tad boomy in the bass, but I got used to it. They sounded great on everything except for classical, and they weren't the best for jazz, but great for rock and r&b and rap, etc. Of course, now, after upgrading my home setup, they sound pretty muddy to me, but I still like them. However, I am a detail freak, and I'm starting to think that my Beyer DT-880's aren't detailed enough. But if you're not a detail freak, I think that they should suit you quite well.

Well, comparing the SF5P to the E4c, I like the SF5P better. it sounds more even, while the highs were more dominant in the E4c. the E4c were more exact in their sound, the the SF5P was more fun to listen to.

Etymotic ER-4P/ER-4S is hard to beat in the $200 range (now $170-180 at Amazon). You'll need amp for the S though.

how's the quality in the LF range and up top?

i have not looked into the etymotic ER-4P yet but after quickly doing a google (i believe thats become a verb now), i'm now tempted to look further into these IEMs. i'm not sure how these compare to the super fi 5s ?
