Try looking for a second hand Sony DVP-S7000. This is Sony's first generation top-of-the-line DVD player. Comes with 2 separate lens for the CD and DVD section. Overbuilt and overengineered.

A few reviews,

What is a good transport?

My Rega has a top end Sony transport and transport electronics.
It works when it works. But when it meets a damaged or sick cd it acts the same as my cheap sony changer. So what is real quality? Most CD mechanisms on any reasonable unit will last a LONG time (except for maybe drawer systems).

Top loaders without the tray can be said to be more reliable.

But my old Onkyo CD player is a great transport. Better the the Sony in the Rega. It would play ANYTHING, which meant it's error correction and tracking were superb. It had FOUR D/A converters.
But the Rega sounds great.

Depends on how you are going to spend your money?

Buy cheap unit. live with it.
Buy moderate unit, add moderate DAC.
Buy cheap unit and good DAC (Channal Islands Audio?).
Buy cheap deck, good DAC, then upgrade either or both later.
Buy good all in one unit at first, and live with it without the aggravations or worrying about later upgrades.

Heck. By a new Rega, Arcam, or equivilent and buy some good CD's and electronics.

I bought a used Adcom GCD-575 three years ago, and I'm thrilled with it. As a stand-alone unit, it does a nice job. As a transport, it's an excellent value. It's built like a tank. They can be had used for between $125 and $150 on a fairly regular basis.

Also, assuming that you're using a DAC, what type of output are you looking to use from the transport?? This is also a huge factor in which one will work for you!!!

I want to get the cdp, use it for a while then get the DAC, which will probably be a Shigaraki. Can you tell me about outputs?

Fred,
The Planet 2000 is on my list. What do you think of it as a standalone player, and about it's quality?

There's optical digital, SPDIF, and many more that are better than the standard RCA outs. Many people here are much mor einformed about this than I am, I just know that the outputs other than RCA are much better for running data to the DAC's inputs. Make sure that whatever inputs are on your DAC are also on your CDP transport also!! Won't do any good to buy a good old CDP and have your DAC as a paper weight!!! Will it??

I have the original Rega Planet. Am very happy with it.
If it ever goes, I would probably get the Rega 2000. Very happy with mine.
