I have owned and loved my HD 590's for almost a year now, but have heard that the stock cable kinda sucks. I would like to fir it with another, but (1) don't feel like paying an arm and a leg and (2) would like to make the cable myself. Any suggestions as to how to go about this and/or what cables would help to improve these headphones? Thanks

well, i got a cheap headphile cable since a solder connection was broken but i can tell you after fixing it and hooking it up to my headfive, i was pretty surprised at how much better they sounded. still not up to snuff with even my goldrings but sounded pretty darn good.

i've recabled and made my own interconnects and it is pretty easy. keep in mind the jack on the headphone side is a sub-mini. i would recommend for wire - silver plated copper coated with teflon. i use 22 awg. this gives you good flexibility. there's a guy on ebay who a number of head-fi'ers have used including myself. i believe his id is navships. i'm a fan of his wire and he is very reasonable with pricing and quick with shipping. get yourself some techflex and some heatshrink and you are good to go. check out the DIY board and you'll get a lot of good pointers. that's where i started.

i haven't had any problems. i litz braid my wires and have had nothing but beautiful blackground on everything i've made. i've been toying with the idea of trying coax for my rca ICs but more for the experience of working with coax. i haven't made anything real long - 4 foot at the most - but so far so good.

The stock cable on the HD-590 doesn't suck. It's a lightweight, flexible cable with very little acoustic transmission to the cans. Recabling would be a total waste of money.

See ya
