My old pair of Koss R/10s died the other day, so I'm looking for a new pair of headphones. I googled around, read some of the posts here, etc and haven't found all that much that peaks my interest, except for the Koss PortaPros. I tested them out at a store and they sounded quite nice. =)

So, I was wondering if ye experts oot there could give me some advice for buying a pair of phones based on these specifics:

-They need to be foldable/compact because I'll be backpacking for 6+ months with them

-Max $80-100 USD

-Ear buds don't fit my ears. I've tried 6+ pairs of buds, and they all fall out and are uncomfortable.

My musical tastes range quite bit. I listen to quite a bit of music that has a lot of bass, and don't listen to much classical music.

So, if anyone out there has suggestions or comments, I'm all ears!
Thanks!
Nick

I suppose you can also try the Senns PX100. They sound pretty good for the price and rivals the Porta Pros.

Some prefer the PortaPros, some the PX100, i havent heard the PortaPros so i cant say anything

I too would suggest the Sennheiser PX100's. The price is pretty good for the sound quality that you will get out of them. They also come with a nice plastic carrying case, which is very conveniant for traveling.

Yeah I saw the PX100s and read several reviews of them and they've been recommended on many sites, but then I found out that they apparently are terrible when on an airplane, which is a bit of a problem =P I read this in only one review/site. Can anyone back it up or contest it?

Thanks for the suggestions!

Well you've got a bit of a problem so to speak. Any headphone I'd recommend for backpacking wouldn't be one I'd recommend for an airplane. Why? simple, isolation. While you're backpacking you're not going to want any. You'll want to be aware of your surroundings. This is where something like a portapro or PX100 would be great. I've personally used the PX100 in the past and think it would suit your needs (for backpacking) and musical tastes very well. On the other hand, when you're on the plane, isolation is an absolute must! What I think you should do is use your budget to pick up two different headphones. If you're careful about where you buy them you can get the PX100 for around $30 (I paid $29.99+tax) and a Shure E2 for around $60 (I paid $55 plus tax at Guitar Center but I have particularly good repore with the guys at my GC) which keeps you in your budget. Both cans have a similar flavor in that they are a little dark but have plenty of bass. Between them, your multiple needs are met. They're both pretty rugged for their size and both come with a carry case that will be useful for your purposes. Good luck, and have fun!

BTW, the E2 is not an earbud, it's a canalphone. It goes into the ear canal and won't fall out, especially if you use the foamies. I find them extreamly comfortable and can wear them for hours.
