Hey guys!

My friend just told me he was interested in getting some decent headphones, since he has been using crappy headphones that come with your walkman, etc. He told me his budget was around $100 and plans to use them primarily at his house, so portability isn't a need at all. I suggested the Sennheiser HD555 or Grado SR60 or SR80 for him, since he doesn't have a headphone amp.

He listens to alot of rock, blues, jazz, soul, and r&b. Pretty eclectic taste in music actually, and I know he appreciates good highs. Sealed/Closed headphones are not necessary because he doesn't care how much sound he leaks, just good sound.

I think I made some solid suggestions, but I'm wondering if there were anymore suggestions you guys could make? Thanks!

Those suggestions are good. The ATH-500 Art phones are good. The Senn HD 280 pro's are also good sounding and comfortable, but Grado's would be a good choice given the genre of his music.

Btw he's in the US right? If he's not, try to get one used from the FS forums or eBay.

I've heard on another thread ( http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=238942 ) that the Alessandro ms-1 are really good and even better than the SR-60. How do they compare to the SR-60 and SR-80 in terms of sound?

Also, he does live in the US, but the ATH-500 art phones are hard for me to find brand new. Are there any other Audio Technica headphones that are good around that price range, and how do they sound as well?

Yes, go for the MS-1

I own a pair of those, and i have nothing but great things to say about them.

You can get them for $99 from alessandro's web site and they are a major upgrade for that kind of music. IMO the best choice for up to $100...

The MS-1 has a little more bass and is not as bright as the SR-60. I recommend getting the MS-1.

You may also look into getting a Koss KSC75. Great sound for less than $20. Spend the other $80 buying more music.

Thanks for the suggestions and the info guys! I'll let my friend know, and I'll see what he thinks. He'll probably go for the MS1... well I hope he does because I wonder how they compare to my SR60! Oh, nudging my friend towards headphones for my own selfish needs!

I saw a guy wearing Grados and working at a laptop at a patio table outside a Starbucks. He looked like a geek -- but he looked happy!

That's the Head-Fi spirit ...
