i was wondering if there's a successor to the sony nw-hd5. i like the battery life and the high sound quality, as well as the minimalist nature of it (monochrome display, no frills, small sized, user-replaceable battery) because it serves its function well. however, it's discontinued, and it uses a badly designed software (sonicstage) for transferring music. since it doesn't seem like sony isn't coming out with a nw-hd6 anytime soon, is there any alternative that's like it, without sonicstage? i don't care much for ipods or any fancy video features. thanks in advance...

It was the A3000. Very sexy form, I hold one and had to buy it. Same SQ, but the screen is unreadable in daylight and it lasts <10 has on a charge, a very serious dealbreaker. After the A-series (there were also 8 and 10 Gb-versions) Sony did not issue another HD-player. Me, I've got the Sony A808 8Gb flashplayer. Gorgeous thing with even better Sq, more detail and dynamics, less warm sound though, leaner. Like probably everyone who owns one I absolutely adore it.
There is also the A81x. Same thing, but without Atrac and Sonic Stage.

I own 2 NW-HD5s very much for the reasons you state. Both loaded with 320kbps MP3s. I've always voided the Sonicstage software by simply using the Sony MP3 File Manager software, which is actually loaded onto and run from the player, allowing me to use it wherever I take the player itself!

(i.e. any PC without having to load sonicstage software)

Just to clarify, the A80X series uses Sonic Stage and has Atrac. The A81X series is drag and drop without Atrac.

The Sound is amazing!!! Check out my review:

Well, in Japan they still use Sonic Stage for the NW-A series. The top of the line is the NW-A919 which has 16GB of flash memory. The NWZ series is the series without ATRAC, gapless, Sonic Stage, etc.

the NW-HD5 wasnt made famouse just by its sound quality, it had a mini USB and removable battery, aswell as being easy to take apart, it could be upgraded to 30gb and 40gb, and installing mp3FM on it would make it practicly drag and drop on any windows system or any decent working windows emulation envirenment,

even after the NW-A3000, no real successor has been manufactured, no mini usb, no removable battery, no user friendly,

But it doesn't use SonicStage. That was already mentioned. I think that's why people are rushing out to buy it, because it's no longer tied to SS.
