Im currently using a pair of 20 dollar bookshelf speakers and a Yamaha yst-sw100 subwoofer. I am heading off to college and i am replacing the bookshelves with AV-123 X-ls monitors. But the Sub has to stay at home for alot of reasons.

So, what subwoofer at about the 400 dollar price point will provide the same impact as the Yamaha sub, perhaps with a little bit more refinement?

Thanks,

I was looking at these two..Since i will be living above somebody do you think it would be better to go with the forward firing as opposed to the downfiring?

I am also open to DIY projects but my skill level as far as building any kind of speaker is null.

If you're living above someone, the best subwoofer is no subwoofer (if you want your neighbors not to kill you).

DIY will get you a lot more bass for the money. But it takes a good amount of time, energy, and testing. If you enjoy that, then I highly recommend it. Check out the DIY section in avsforums. Lots of info on DIY subs there.

However, when you're done with the DIY, you will have a sub that will guarantee that your neighbors will get you evicted. Seriously. Before you know it, they'll have you convinced to build something like this:

Forward vs. down firing makes no difference...yes, your neighbors will despise you just the same.

Hahaha yeah i looked at the AVSforums DIY page yesterday and decided that might be a bad idea. Especially since i wont really have alot of time to build anything like that.

Does anybody have an opinion on the X-sub by AV123, i could probably get a package deal if i bought it with the X-ls speakers, but i would like something that would give reason for my neighbours to despise me.

I really dont listen to music all that loud anyway.

I read both of these reviews before I made my decision to go with the Hsu sub. I did, however, go with av123 for their rockets and center channel

Another thing to consider is that my vtf-1 was sitting in my living room 2 days after I ordered it. Who know how long it will take you to get anything "x-series" related from av123. I waited for a month on my x-mtm's and x-cs before I finally upgraded to the rockets. (the rockets shipped right away. av123 is a great company, but they have a huge backlog with their x-series stuff)

Alright so I read some of the reviews off that site and it looks like the STF-1 might be the better choice since its 100 dollars less and got basically the same review.

Anybody have any thoughts on that?

I got a HSU STF-1 and it sound great! The bass is really musical and never bloated and blend in the music really well. It got my thumbs up!

The X-sub has an 8" woofer, that's never going to move the kind of air a 10" or 12" will. Their Rocket UFW-10 is phenominal, and I find it to be more musical than the HSU offereings. It's $200.00 above your price point however.
Here's another option which requires very little skill. Basically everything is built, you just put it together.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think this is going to work out pretty good for me. I dont really need the kind of boom that a 12 inch sub would give me. Im living in a dorm and i have people on most sides of me so im really looking more at refinement than power.

I should have my whole set up (KA-7100>STF-1+X-ls) within 3 weeks and i'll make a new thread with pictures.

Thanks for everybodys help!
