I'm using an MJ Acoustics sub, but you Americans have so much choice in great subwoofers.
I allways liked the big bad bass of the big JBL's, but that was in cars...
Here in Europe REL is a big contender, but I think an American brand will be more interesting to you.
In my case the MJA works great with my Dynaudio's.
For serious music listening I use next to nothing of the power availlable from the sub, otherwise the bass is much to excaggerated imo.

The Onix Rocket UFW-10 is the best sub I've ever heard for $600.00. It's on par with my old Velodyne that cost over twice as much many years ago. You get a 500 watt amp, 1 band parametric EQ, variable crossover and real wood veneer. They sound superb. I own two of them. I also love that you have a choice of SE or XLR inputs, I use one for right and one for left in my fully balanced system.

i enjoy hsu research subwoofers, and they're all within your pricerange. they aren't very pretty though. i haven't heard a better subwoofer than them, save the top velodyne offerings.

also, no one in this topic has agreed on a subwoofer yet. honestly, as long as it goes down to 20hz, it's most likely good. just make sure you aren't making it cover too much of the midbass. i like to make bookshelves flat to 80 hz, then roll off to -6db at 70hz. i like to make subwoofers flat to 80hz, then roll off to -6db at 90hz.

just make sure you're buying something practical, you won't need a gigantic subwoofer fairly nearfield listening room you posted on the headphone setup thread. nothing over 12". i'd kill for an hsu vtf-3, and it's in your pricerange, and in maximum extension mode it reaches down a little below 20hz, flat. but again, pretty much anything will get the job done. subwoofers are boring.

I would advise you to listen to the Richter Thor IV - fantastic ability to produce a wide tonal range given its price...

I second the recommendation for Hsu Research subwoofers. I have a VTF-2 MK2 that sounds fantastic. It has really tuneful bass, not the crappy one note thumping of most low priced subs. At under $500, it beat several $1000+ and one $2000+ competitor that I listened to.

Unfortunately, Hsu has discontinued the VTF-2 MK2, and replaced it with the MK3, which is a larger unit with a 12-inch woofer instead of 10-inch, and a much bigger cabinet. The 10-inch version plays plenty loud and plenty deep in my 16 x 20 foot living room. (The VTF-2 MK3 still sells for under $500.) Also unfortunately, Hsu has discontinued the piano black glossy finish, which looks quite nice. (The black versions now offered are all a rather dull looking matte finish.) Nevertheless, you'd be hard pressed to find a better sounding sub in this price range.

HSU VTF series is a good line. SVS does some nice subs as does Onix. I for some reason just prefer the HSU line more then any of the others. Customer Service is quite good too.
