After a friend gave me the Headhunters cd for Christmas, I've wanted to start a collection of jazz .

Since I know nothing about it, I'm looking for suggestions of just the best jazz tracks

Thanks in advance!!

If you like Headhunters by Herbie Hancock you should also like these releases from Herbie Hancock:

"Thrust"
"Secrets"
"Man-Child"

It doesn't have to be fusion or even be similar to Herbie Hancock.

Get into Miles Davis; one of the greatest ever:

"Bitches Brew"- Fusion
"E.S.P."- Acoustic
"Kind Of Blue"- Acoustic
"In A Silent Way"- Fusion

Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi recordings are excellent fusion (jazz & funk)

Also try "normal" jazz... 50s hard bop and previous...

Maybe it's 'cause I'm a trombonist, but by any standard, really, JJ Johnson's recordings are PHENOMENAL jazz.

Chameleon's pretty funky. Use to be able to play the bassline couple of years back. For lighthearted Jazz I would recommend Dave Brubeck's Time Out and Norah Jone's Come Away with Me. For the funky stuff go for Weather Report especially when they had Jaco Pastorious with them.

For me, nothing does it like Miles Davis' Kind of Blue
