Strength of solder joints?

Newbie question--how strong can solder joints be made to be? I can see two types of strain on solder joints if they are not on a PCB...

1. pull--e.g. two wires are soldered together but what happens when you tug on it by accident
2. twist--e.g. when the wire is soldered back onto the 9V connector on my currently broken Porta Corda

and every time I hold the connector up to connect to or disconnect from the power supply it's going to twist the joint...

if you make a good solder joint a circut board , or in the case of "hardwired " equipment-the part/pcb will break before the soldered connection
