Pretty strange, but at work there are a couple of computers, one has a 40x CD-R drive and a 48x CD-R/DVD-R drive, and the other just has a 48x CD-R/DVD-R drive. The 40x CD-R drive can spit out a full data CD-R in 3-4 minutes, while the faster rated CD-R/DVD-R drives take upward of 10 minutes on both computers to shoot out the same CD-R data disc. Is there a logical explanation for this? Both are on the same EIDE cord.

Perhaps the hard drive in one of the computers is slower than in the other?

Let me clarify, the second computer has both a dedicated CD-R and a combo drive. The 40x CD-R drive in the second computer burns much more quickly than the 48x combo drive in the same computer. The 48x combo drive burns at an identical slow speed in the first computer.

To burn a full CD:

Computer A
48x Combo drive: 10-11 min
40x dedicated CD-R drive: 3-4 min

Computer B
48x Combo drive: 10-11 min

Maybe.. the combo drive is of lower quality and doesn't have write speeds as constant as the CD-R drive and/or doesn't reach the maximum write speed as often? I'm not sure about this..

That number before a drive borders on meaningless when the entire drive is considered. There are lots of differences other than that number.

In my experience, CD-only writers have always been much faster.

That's what appears to be the case. I was just wondering if other people had noticed the same thing. Seems odd that it would take a brand new 4MB cache, 48x combo drive 10+ minutes to burn a CD at max speed wheras the old CD writer that came with a Dell would record one in a third of the time.
