With the volume at minimum, and no source connected, I can hear two distinct background noises in the left channel. One is a periodic clicking between 5 to 20 times per second (not all the time); the other is a high pitched sound similiar to a boiling teapot (all the time). Both sounds are very faint.

If I put my hand over the left earcup for about 30 seconds, the clicking increases rapidly and then disappears, while the teapot sound rises in pitch until it also dissappears (probably goes out of my hearing range before disappearing). Those sounds come back less in than a minute afterwards.

This only happens in the left channel. The sound is distinct enough that I can hear it as long as the music isn't very loud or dense.

I had this happening when they were very cold (I bought them in the winter).
After the amp was warm I never had it happening again, it happened only once and it dissapeared quickly.
I blamed it on the cold but it could very well be some dust particles stuck somewhere.
You can take the grilles off much like with the hd 600, the construction is similar (I have never done this myself.)

One other thing, should I replace the ear pads? Are new HE60 ear pads as plush as the HD600s?

The earpads on your he60 are in excellent condition, the material used on the top part is slightly different and of better quality then that of the hd600, the hairs are thicker if not as deep black colored, also the pads do not deform because of the leather that surrounds it. while the hd 600 pads do deform badly after heavy use.
Getting other pads should be possible, but I didn't find any when i was looking for some.

Yep.

I believe these will be my end-of-journey phones!

The clarity of presentation is breathtaking (makes ER4 sound veiled

). The only weakness I found so far is that the highest registers sound too metallic in chamber music. In symphonic music, the metallic effect is mellowed out by the fullness of the sound.

I wonder if a HD600/WooAudio vs HE60/HEV70 would be a fair subject for comparison?

Probably dirt or dust in the element. Next time it happens look
at the led on the amplifier. If it is changing color then the amplifier
thinks it is in overload mode. This can be caused by too much
bias current, or a shorted cable.

Hmm HE90? Maaaybe a KGSS/Blue Hawaii first
biggrin.gif
It seems like no one has done a direct comparison of Blue Hawaii vs HEV70 (who cares that the BH costs more than the Baby O system combined). What does KGSS/BH do for the HE60?

Also, can I leave the HE60/HEV70 connected and powered at all times? It would be sweet not having to think about them warming up.

Do you use a back-up system during warm-up? The line-out from the HEV70 is very convinent to have

Right now, I have it connected to a WooAudio+HD600; ironically the tube-amp also needs warm up. *shamless plug for my fs/t thread *
