Sorry about the word stereotype, attention getter (puts on flame suit). Now onto the story I thought was interesting.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/connected...1/nmetal21.xml

"Intelligent teenagers often listen to heavy metal music to cope with the pressures associated with being talented, according to research." That is full of crap to me, what pressures?

I thought it was interesting because me and m friend are both ranked 27th in our class of 600, and we both listen to power metal (Blind Guardian as I'm typing). The article mentions self esteem problems as one of the factors, which anyone I know would tell you I don't, however my friend does, and as mentioned in the article my parents are divorced.

The scientists are discovering things about me that I don't even know!

What's the flash point of your flame suit ?

If they're intelligent enough, they know how to handle their own stress. Listening to heavy metal is just an excuse. Heavy metal is just another life style, and they think it was cool to be part of the "Heavy Metal" trend.

I see quite a few intelligent kids listen and/or perform classical musics, and they're under full load of stress from being teenagers.

edit: ok, rethought this one. give me a minute to edit my new response.

i am in the top 2% academically in my age group in the US. i listen to heavy metal music. i see no connection between these two at all.

i know ZERO people that taste in the top 5% that listen to metal music. i mainly find the druggie, future dropouts to be the ones to listen to the bands listed in this article. these druggie, future dropouts just so happen to be my best friends and the only people that i actually deem "intelligent". booksmarts are worthless if you don't know how to interact with people, have common sense etc. also none of these people that i refer to listen to it to "relieve the stress". i know i don't.

plus, the article states that only 6% cited metal as their #1 genre. a little bit over 60 people. this is not a very accurate poll at all, and it really goes against my beliefs in what makes a person intelligent + why people listen to the music they do... blagh, who cares. really intelligent people listen to all music!

Also, performance is weakly/moderately correlated with aptitude, which is also weakly/moderately correlated with intelligence, so the correlation between performance and intelligence is likely rather weak -- being 27th in a class of 600 would indicate that you are likely of above average intelligence but not necessarily in the top 4.5% as you are insinuating.

They didn't go to my high school.

I think you've misread the article, though.

Quote:

There is literature that links heavy metal to poor academic performance and delinquency but we found a group that contradicts that.

They found a subset that goes against the rest of the literature, i.e an anomoly.

Quote:

The researchers surveyed 1,057 members of the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth - a body whose 120,000 student members are within the top five per cent academically in the 11-19 age range.

Asked for their favourite type of music, 39 per cent said rock, 18 per cent R&B and 14 per cent pop. Six per cent said heavy metal and a third rated it in their top five genres.

A very small % of this sample of gifted students listen primarily to metal compared to other forms of music.

Furthermore:

Quote:

The heavy metal fans in the study had lower self-esteem and more difficulties in family relationships and friendships.

Now that sounds more like the metal-heads that I grew up with.

Ah, so this is another classic example of selective interpretation.

Well, I must admit that I find correlations like this quite interesting. I would probably guess that grunge metal and emo have the highest correlations with certain personalities than any other genres. I guess I'll file this away in my list of future studies if I actually keep this Psychology degree all the way through.

The thread should be changed to 'smart YOUNG people'

All those doctors living in nursing homes aren't exactly lining up around the block to buy a Judas Priest CD.

I am sorry (not really

) but you've just contradicted yourself AND proved the research to be correct.

i have a mole on my left foot, and i ate a banana for breakfast today. doesn't anyone want to do a "study" on me and my kind?

iow, correlation does not equal causation.

in my school the valedictorian listened to Indian music, runner up (me) listens to indie rock, third place (my best friend) listens to new-ish brit pop (coldplay, keane etc)

theres no correlation between music and intelligence that I see
