I was wondering if anyone here has attempted to create a comprehensive list of headphones, categorized a la Stereophile (e.g. Class A, Class B, etc.)?

If not, I was thinking this could be a worthy project for a distinguished group of Head-Fiers. Surely we all hear differently and have different ideas about what makes a great/good headphone, but arguing about headphones is what we do best! Perhaps, instead of making this a mass democracy effort, we could elect a small (but not too small) group of respected Head-Fiers to come up with a list?

I think it would be great for newbies coming to the site to have a quick reference of what headphones are out there and how they rank generally in comparison to other headphones.

Another useful task would be to categorize headphones according to which cans are best for which types of music. It seems that that type of question is asked several times every week.

I see blood being drawn over this. Woe to he who tries to put the HD600 into Class B!

In all seriousness though, there is a thread floating around with a rating of cans already...its pretty comprehensive. I'll go look...if its not stickied I could do that and make it a type of guide for newbies.

What I REALLY want to see is a thread specifically on synergy. Something like:

Headphone:
AMP:
Tube:
Tweak: (Cable/Pad)

Source/IC/PC would definitely be in the realm of flava! flava! But at least the above would get someone started. When I refer to tweak, I would specifically relate that to the Sennheisers and the plethora of aftermarket ones and the pads to the Grado ordeal.

Won't there be even more blood being drawn over putting the K1000 and R10 into Class B?

I had never heard of the R10's until about a month ago and I understand that they're really expensive and some owners like Markl love them.

What are the criteria? Over the years, Stereophile has come to shovel everything that sounds good into Class A. Go back in time, and all recommended components were good, but only the creme de la creme made it into Class A. What does it take to make Class A, B, C etc. in this thread?

I agree that this could be a problem...that would put a deserving B component into the Sennheiser slot...of the C group!
