I just got my Second handed HP100 today. I surprise by how heavy was the HP100 compare to my headfive. I was excited and opened the box as soon as I went back to my room, and that's when the problem started.

I am currently living in a dorm. Which means I have limited space. After around an hour fooling around with my desk set up, I can't find any open spot that I can put my amp

Here is my question. do you think is safe for me to set my HP100 vertically?

the amp is heavy, so I think the component inside must be. If I set it up vertically, will I damage the amp in the long run?

you could put something on top of it that currently takes up space on your desk, or have you tried that.

I tried. But the result is not good. the will be sticking out too long that I either need to move my screen side way or move it to the front. I am not comfortable with looking at the monitor with my body side way, and it is even worse if I move my monitor to the front. Because then> I will only have space to put my keyboard and almost nothing else.

Also, due to the length of the cable (4 feet). I can only move it just a little bit from my computer... so the range is also a problem

if your headphone cable is long and you have bitperfect output even when you change the volume on the computer, i suggest the floor, and controlling the volume through foobar.

I am not quiet sure what do you mean by that. Yes, I have a bit match output enable directly connected to my up using my x-fi to the amp. Does that count?

I agree with Thelonious Monk that you could put it on the floor, but don't mind what he said about making sure your source is bit-perfect throughout all volumes. I suppose some software assumes that you are going to control the volume from your amp / pre-amp only, but I wouldn't think the X-Fi is configured that way.

Are you talking about putting the amp on its' side, i.e. turned 90 degrees from how it would normally sit? If so, I don't really see the problem, so long as it is propped up between something else to keep it from falling over. If not, and you mean putting it on end, I think that would be a bad idea, as the cables at the end would get squashed.

These Stello units are some of the most-well built around, and all the parts inside are very securely anchored. I think the only potential troubles are either screwing up your cables, or getting the Stello damaged cosmetically.

Although I currently don't own the Stello HP 100 I was fortunate enough to
have one that I was "running in" for a customer last year.

Firstly, you have to take your hat off to April Music ( makers of Stello ) for a piece of kit that is built like a "brick ****house" ( Aussie term ) aka - bulletproof ! The quality PCB and component layout as well as the casing is top notch.

I had the unit on for over 2 wks with music playing through it and the
casing was warmish at best. Mind you I had it sitting on a concrete floor
and sitting on the normal horizontal position with nothing in it's way. I don't believe it would cause the unit any harm if you placed it on its side as long as you DON'T obstruct the vent holes that are on the top/bottom of the casing.

It's a nice bit of kit !
