Thank you. I'm now wondering how I would control volume. Neither the Vidar or the SRD-7 have volume controls? I guess I would need a preamp too?

hehe, yeah. The connections would look like: digital or analog back-end > preamp > power amp > electrostatic converter > headphones

I use the $49 Schiit SYS passive preamp, but there are fancier ones out there.

I will also mention that my Behringer KM750 power amp (which I use with floorstanding speakers) has twice as much power as the Vidar and is class AB, yet only costs $150. It looks cool too (kinda like the Cavalli Liquid Gold) but has a fan system that makes noise. (Only a problem when music is not playing, really, and it always stays cool.) Both are large and heavy, so you may have to put it on the ground.

Thanks for the tip on the Behringer. This is getting a bit complicated. I think I'll just keep looking for a 252S or 323. I'd like to keep components to a minimum.

As long as you don't listen at dangerously loud levels, the SRM-252S should be enough for you to start with. (Personally I wouldn't bother with amp upgrades until after upgrading to higher-end STAX.)

I have pretty sensitive ears, so I don't listen very loud at all. I'm just getting a bit impatient. I've found set of pre owned L300s at a good price, but can't find a pre-owned Stax amp at a fair price to run them.
Starting to look at alternatives. Best to just keep focused on a 252 or 323.
Thanks again for all the advice!

How much are you looking to spend total? I'm pretty in-tune with the market and may be able to help point you in the right direction.

For example, I got the SRS-3100 (SR-L300 + SRM-252S) with some nice extras for just $650. Brand new ones are available from Japan for under $700.

This AC adapter is linear and regulated https://www.ebay.com/itm/Arndt-MT18...931950?hash=item1c776107ae:g:QGMAAOSwcUBYSp97
Since it's regulated, it's a much cleaner power supply than any non-regulated junk you will get, including the stock one that comes with the srm-252s. It's rated at 1.5 amp, so that's x4.5 more than the .333 amp of the stock adapter.

This battery is in all likelihood electrically quieter by at least a couple orders of magnitude than even that adapter https://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-12V-800...402752?hash=item2a912eff40:g:RRkAAOSwDNdVqffN

Decisions, decisions. Shall I choose the more convenient option, or the electrically cleaner one? There's options with even more storage, like one with 20,000mAh for $30.

I have zero interest into getting any amp beyond the srm-252s, so I figure upgrading from the crappy stock adapter would be the easiest and cheapest upgrade for a STAX system.

I used this regulated linear power supply and reverse polarity converter with the SRM-252S. (Don't use the first one without the second.)

I was planning on doing some cutting and soldering. I looked at that same jameco power supply you linked, but couldn't find it on ebay. There's also a .5 amp version, but I prefer to have more overhead.

Makes little difference to me. Both seem like good adapters for the energizer. The one I linked has 6 watts more overhead anyway, and it's only $18 with shipping for me. I might end up getting a battery, after all.
