Got these baby staxes today, overall impression is favorable especially after switching the tips installed by default for the included smaller ones. There are a few gripes but it's a bit too early to talk about them. However, just out of curiousity, has anyone ever tried to open/mod their amplifier? It seems that the phones themselves are capables of much more than this amp can deliver and maybe a little modding could go a long way here.

I would agree the phones are probably more capable than the amp.
A simple mod I would recomend is running the unit on more
voltage.
4 Volts max is recomened by stax, but for obvious
reasons do not endorse any modifications to their products.

This added voltage can be easily achieved [if a little more bulk is
not a problem] by feeding the 4volt DC into the transformer input
jack...DO OBSERVE THE JACKS CORRECT POLARITY[marked on unit].
3x 1.2v nimh cells of your chosen capacity will do fine here.
I myself use a 5v 3800mah pack regulated to 4v[so I can use the
packs to drive the dac etc].
