I got an IPOD classic (80 gig) free and want to change the head phones. I am fond of electrostatic speakers (used to own Quads) anf I am interested in Stax. What kind of sound can I expect usind an Ipod as a source?

I'm interested in the Stax SR-001 mk2.

Can I make the full size Stax work with the Ipod?

Thanks,

Stacey

You can expect great portable sound from the SR-001 MK2.
Its not on par with full sized Stax', since its quite a bit rolled of in both ends. But considering its portability, and price, its a great buy.

Full sized Stax' can be hooked up to an iPod. I use one for my secondary rig, and its not bad at all.

ah, assuming you want to use the lineout of the iPod you'd use a line out dock to RCA cable as the stax like most home gear uses RCA connections instead of 3.5mm plugs.

S² Audio: Dockit something like that is very fancy

but you can get cables that go from iPod dock > RCA that cost less, but that is a an attractive solution.

But beware, they are very detailed headphones and you may soon become dissatisfied with your iPod's performance and want a better source

I'm pretty sure you're going to need a line out dock to feed the SR-001MK2 as well. I've never seen one, so I don't know for sure, but I can't believe you feed it from a headphone out.

You can use any 1/8 to 1/8 stereo interconnect from the headphone out of the iPod but ideally you would use a line-out dock for the best SQ. Also, it really helps to have an interconnect with a right angle plug because the SR001 jack is located on the side.

iPods have a pretty thin and bright sound signature which goes really well with the warm thick sound that the SR001 produces. They really tame the iPod's sound.

You will need an iPod line out cable. With an iPod dock connector in one end, and RCA or other connector in the other end.

Hi, I have the IPod Classic also. I use it with any of my Stax Pro Headphones-see list below. If you can get a used Stax SRDX Pro Power Pack/Adapter off of Ebay or Audiogon; you will absolutely love its sound and power. It takes 8 C batteries as well as being plugged into the wall with an adapter. I get about 50 hours of listening when using it through the Batteries. I actually like the sound that comes out of the SRDX Pro more than the sound that comes out of the SRM007t or SRM007ta. The SRDX Pro does not come up for sale on Ebay or other internet auction sites to often; so grab one when you can. You should make sure that you buy the pro and not the six pin non pro. The SRDX non pro is not as good as the SRDX Pro model. Scottsmrnyc
