Hey everyone,

So I ordered some of the harder to find bits for the CMOY from Digi-key, like the burr-brown op-amps, a Serpac H-65 case, some DIP sockets, etc..

I'm going to pick up the rest at my local RadioShack.

However, I need to get some tools. I'm going to get a digital multimeter, a soldering station etc and a dremel.

The dremel is the kicker. What do you guys recommend? It doesn't need to be high end by any means, just something that will reliably and easily cut into a plastic project box (and possibly my Playstation 2 later on, for another project

). My dad had one ~ 10 years ago, and I had some experience using it, but that disappeared somewhere.

Suggestions are welcome, as is general advice for the ultra-newb DIY headphone amp builder!

THANKS!

Off the top of my head, here's some things that can come in handy if you decide to get into more DIY projects:

- Digital Caliper: comes in handy when you need precise measurements such as enclosure thickness, lengths of various items, diameters, etc
- Drill press: for making precise holes for casework
- Dremel: I use it mostly for rectangular holes. The most basic Dremel is all that's needed with a rotary cutting wheel bit
- Flush cutter: for snipping wire leads after you've soldered them down on a PCB or perf board - leaves it nice and flush
- Unibit: a stepped bit that makes very nice smooth holes
- Tweezers: if you want to get into SMD/SMT soldering this is a must, get a very fine tip tweezer
- PCB holder: if you're extravagant get a pcb holder (DigiKey #: 0051502699). I picked one up, but haven't had the chance to use it yet. This is a different alternative to the "helping hands" device you can find at RadioShack
- Isopropyl Alcohol: I have a 99.953% type. It's used for cleaning PCB's before and after soldering

Hey folks,

So, I got (most of) the parts to build my CMOY.

I'm currently doing the basic preparation, bridging the various portions of the breadboard. There is one section of the schematic

that calls for two bridges.. in other words, two parts in a single hole.

Now, I'm not very good at soldering

I did get a decent temperature controlled soldering station with sponge etc... I cant seem to get both little bridge wires in the socket at the same time. I put one in and soldered it, then tried to add another one, but that hasn't worked well so far.. If I try to insert both at the same time, I cant hold the fracking things in place.

total newb here.. words of advice would be appreciated

blue misfit,
the bridge is also referred to by Tangent as an "m" jumper... Its supposed to be one piece...use your thinnest component lead clipping to make them...it also helps to crimp them really tight in the center, after you bend them into the "m" shape

you could just use wire on the bottom too...

I ended up making a sort of "s" shape, and smashing it down nicely with my needle nose pliers.

My CMOY is coming along nicely, I made the power supply half of it last night, and everything worked and checked out ok with the DMM, save for my poor LED, which was only given a 1k resistor, when it really needed a 10k. I switched it out today, and everything is working nicely.

Now, as soon as digi-key gets my op-amps, sockets, and box to me, I'll be good to go!
