I want to try to pick up the Audiophile hobby. I am using many consumer headphones from writing reviews on the web. None of them are quite audiophile quality. I want to find a good pair that is iin the $100-$200 range that are a great value. I've read mixed reviews on the Grados saying that they're uncomfortable, but provide great sound. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Music genre tastes?

Do you want an open or closed headphone?

Are you prepared to get an amplifier or not for a specific headphone?

I pretty much like all genres ranging from rap to classic rock. I do not have a preference of open or closed. I heard that open backs have a more "open" sound. I'm thinking of picking up a Fiio E9.

I'm a Grado man at heart and like many fellow head-fiers feel that they resolve classic rock like no other
can, having said that, you cannot have it all in one can. Rap and hip hop is given decent impact even with
a pair of Grado SR80i's but the bass can lack extension which is needed at times with a good thumpy
hip hop track.

E9 is a good move, you may also want to consider their new product - the E10.
The amp appears to be not as powerful but it does come with an inbuilt DAC
that will replace your existing sound card / on-board laptop sound.

Grados are all open and they do sound much more natural than any closed cup
can in that price range.
