I’m new to headphones, and was wondering if there is any advantage to having a standalone DAC versus using the DAC that’s integrated into my DAP. I’m using the SMSL SH-9 amp, being fed by my FiiO M11, which contains dual AK 4493 DAC chips. For example, the Schiit Modius contains the same DAC chip, would there be any advantage in the sound to using this DAC over the M11?

Dual AK 4493 DAC chips, can't see any reason for using a different DAC (or DAC function).

Thanks for the reply. I thought that this could be the case, but wasn’t sure of a desktop unit would provide better circuitry, operation etc. It’s more convenient for my setup to use the M11 straight into the amp using a 3.5/RCA connector versus USB into another DAC.

It depends on the DAP. The LO on Shanling M6 and Hiby R6 are not that great. Without a doubt I preferred the Modius over the LO from R6 and M6. But then my Cayin N8’s LO is so good that it is better than so many desktop DACs out there. So it really depends on the DAP.

A reason for a standalone DAC is R2R.

Ive use the Dac as standalone on my AK SP1000, and it is a very good device to use as a standalone dac. I assume your decide can do a good job in that regards. Obviously you can always have a better standalone solution.
