SRH840 impression

Yes, agreed. But not as resolving, possibly due to the aforementioned reason.

It is interesting that you found the SRH840 more resolving, what amp are you running them from?

But SRH840 certainly got good detail at its tiny price tag, also maybe the AD1000PRM tends to throw everything from the source file to you at once, I found SRH840 'easier' and less stressful to listen to for longer periods.

It might be that I'm not running the AD2000s to THEIR full potential.. Doesn't matter what I run the 840 from, as long as it's not a poor portable source or tubes. Now I'm doing the comparison as we speak and I'm using the HM-801 as a source and EF5 for amping. The amp does make the 840s a bit thick in comparison, but still sound more balanced. Some melodies in some parts of the frequency spectrum, I hear better with the 840.. The AD2000s are, as you said, more forward and maybe aggressive. I like their presentation for the music I listen to the most, prog/jazz from the 60/70s era..

Ah, EF5. One of the amp I don't like when paired with AD2000. IMO Hifiman tube sounds either strange or just bad with the AD2000, half you tried some half decent SS with it?

The tube give it a smooth sound, but it just sounds abit strange and not as fast.

SS is certainly brighter in most cases and not as smooth, but faster and more detailed (at lease in the same level, not like $9000 tube amps)

You may not like it but I certainly do like it paired with SS.
From an Luxman P1, it really does sound awesome.

Yes, that's what all say. I don't really mind detail and fastness.. I like pitch accuracy of notes, natural transients and general musicality. If you have a good source, a good SS amp might benefit the chain.. However, a bad SS amp just flattens the signal and melodies die. A good impedance match doesn't guarantee this.

Absolutely the best setup for the AD2000s have been the Linn Majik CD paired with Naim Headline 2 + PSU. Absolutely gorgeous.

That is so true, having heard many Little Dots SS and Tubes, the lower end SS 99% just doesn't worth while.

But just as you mentioned it, Naim Headline 2 a £300 SS amp. That really sounds like in my budget, I wonder how does it stack up to the P1...

So which type of amp compliments the D2000? Solid state or tube.I was thinking of buying the Little Dot Mark III.I've never had a tube amp in my collection. So i'm weary of the bass reproduction.

PS.Sorry for getting off topic.

Hey, I just ordered a pair from headroom last week. How different are they from the SRH440s? I really loved the 440s that I heard, so are the SRH840s anything like the 440s?

840s are more laid back, wider soundstage, vocal not as pronounced, overall more detailed, deeper and cleaner bass. The 440 is lively and fun with a distinctive pronounced vocal and mid/high range, while the 840 is laid back, directional and soothing.

That's a good description of the 840 sound signature.

Keep them for a few days, don't hurry to return them back.

At first,i also wanted to return them because of the comfort and of the size, but i'm glad i didn't do that. Now i'm enjoying them, the sound quality is very good and they are more comfortable now.

Damn these are getting me tempted even if I really don't need them. Just bought some ALO-780 and awaiting their arrival. Supposed to be saving for some Grado HF-2 but I really want to compare the ALO-780 to some Shure SRH840 recabled and see which I prefer with the genre I listen to: metal. The HF-2 will be THE headphone for metal that I will ever own I think but having another headphone always comes in handy

So who can have a guess which will be better for metal? SRH840 or ALO-780?? I like upfront sound but less so than Grado SR-225, drums to hit hard and with great clarity and detail, a warm sound signature, smooth mids and a bit of bass but not overpowering the rest of the spectrum. The high's on the SR-225 I can handle, they seem great to me, maybe a TAD too much though.
