I have been researching on this site and reading posts for the better part of a month, but I still can't make up my mind. I want something for ~80 dollars that will have a very well-defined soundstage, good bass, and that will sound good with rock (slipknot, deftones and even NIN). I would also listen to a small amount of techno and classical, but primarily rock. Grado's sound appealing because I want to feel a chunky guitar riff, but i also want to be able to hear the guitarist's fingers sliding down the strings. I'm probably going to be purchasing a chaintech av710 and using foobar2k mostly. Please help!

The difference isn't huge (especially if not comparing side by side), so either is a good choice. That said, it's hard for me to imagine many preferring the SR80 for any genre of music. The highs are just handled better by the Alessandro.

MS1 - more Grado, less Grato.®

good comparo and right in line with the "grato" versus alessandro A/B I did on these cans too. from a current MS-1 owner, i highly recommend these cans over everything in the grado line but the 225s (subjective) and the RS series (aw cmon no contest).
