I Listen to drum 'n' base and some rock/reggae and I need some new headphones badly, Im thinking Grado Labs SR80 or Beyerdynamic DT770 could anyone help?

PS. I would like to decide quickly as I'm impatient with my iPod earbuds rattling and being generally cr*p, I have around £100 to spend.

Take it eZ

If you want to go the Grado route, get a pair of Grado SR-225 instead. Much better than the SR-80 and around the same price as the DT770-80 if you can buy used.

The DT770-80 will still have more bass but the SR-225 is more detailed with a sweeter midrange. Better highs, too, since the DT 770-80 has somewhat recessed highs starting from mid treble: Cymbal crashes, for instance, have lots of initial impact but lack in an airy and realistic decay.

I'd only suggest the DT 770-80 if you need the closed aspect or if you're a serious basshead.

By the way, in this price range, I'd also recommend the Sennheiser HD 580. It has more a slightly more prominent bass than the Grado SR-225 and a darker sound altogether.

The best option would be to audition the headphones in beforehand.

Good luck.

Thanks saint.panda and smittysan89 but I think saint.panda you are right, audition them but I haven't got time to drive to London and I don't think I can push my budget to get the £130 SR225 really (impatience with my now falling apart from bass iPod buds), so I just ordered the SR80 from hificables.co.uk, I had them a couple of years back and remember loving the range of new sounds I heard.

If I become an audiophile head like you guys maybe i'll upgrade my whole system in the future, but for now I think they'll be a satisfactory entry point into the sub £100 headphone arena with NO AMP and iPod, soundcard and TV, and honestly I just love the look of the grado's maybe i'm just old fashioned but I appreciate their radio retro style, and it's not just looks im going for, but reputability, sound clarity and hopefully quite a punchy bass.

Cheers for your help peeps, now I've said all that, hifi cables will proabably deny my transaction cos stupid Barclays takes 1h30 to update your account with cash (What?!?).

Update: Yup, they declined it, now that sux, I rushed my *ss off to get to the bank to pay it in and get back before 3 when the dispatch deadline is, and they postpone my CASH going into my account, how frickin' hard is it to validate some notes and tap in an account number and update balance, god d*mn banks! 1h30mins, I think i'm going to kill myself.. unless the recharge works but I doubt it.

If you ever want to get the DT770s, go here for the 80 ohm version for £90 inc del, I love mine (but not quite as much as my SR225s, heh)

Oh, and if you're getting Grados, buy second-hand shipped from the US. International dealer prices are ridiculous. Bit late now though, it seems

Theoretically, you need them both.

DT 770 for D&B and related, Grado for Rock and Reggae. You should look which music type is your dominant one and choose can according to that.

Edit: Uuuups, should've used browser's "actualize" button before bringing me into discussion.

My warmest congrats to your Grados [....envy...]

shizzle your right Kam, 72.8865 GBP for new SR80's on eBay from HK.
Where could I buy second-hand ones?

Nickchen - Looks like my sporadic taste in music is gonna cause wallet ache, I definatley listen to more electronic music than non-electronic at the mo' tho.

More research required, must cancel order if not dispatched today.

Try the FS forum here for starters

If there's nothing obvious, put up a Wanted post, be prepared to PM people and ask if they're willing to ship internationally (and mark parcels as "gift"). I got my SR225s with C-pads for a little under £140 shipped, which is about half what I would pay for the lot in the UK.

MS1 dude, MS-1!! For 99 USD you can't go wrong. Sound's more neutral and far tighter than the SR80, hands down (Had to A/B the 2 for a friend. Now he's pissed that he paid 135 USD for the SR80s...hehehe)

I have both the MS1 and HD580. For rock, I like the MS1, for trance, downtempo, acid jazz etc, I like my HD580s. HD580s also give more 3-d soundstage than the MS1, but it depends on what you are looking for. HD280s wouldn't be bad either to get to really really low bass ranges. But they'll take a while to get there.

If electronica is your bag, the DT770 is the one to get

- It'll kick the Grado's in the shins untill they cry for their mummy!

If you do decide to go the Grado route - do yourself a favour and order the Alessandro MS1's... They come in at around £60 all in (inc the customs fees etc) and are worth the extra mile to import from the states (based on the SR125 allegedly)
